N96 vs N95 Side By Side

N96 vs N95 Side By Side

James over at the Talk About Nseries blog has found quite a collection of side by side comparison pictures of the N95 8GB and the upcoming N96, two flagship handsets. The pictures are from PConline.com.cn. The N96, being newer, is much more sleek, as you’ll see by the side views, and James points out that the keypad looks well spaced out.

I’ll confess that the back of the N96 looks much cleaner and more professional than that of the N95 8GB, while the front still reminds me of the inferior N81 8GB. I also like the cleaner front of the N96, with the buttons flanking the d-pad disappearing into the background.

However, I wonder if new users who pick up the N96 will be able to figure things out, specially not having the labels on the various buttons. On second thought, the current S60 menu and multimedia button labels, as shown on the N95 8GB, are hardly helpful or indicative of the function they perform, so perhaps that’s a moot point.

What are your thoughts? Which do you think looks better, between these two behemoths?

  1. Hi Ricky! Thanks for linking to the blog!

Just to let you know I have found some more pictures and added them to the post!

    How’s married life!?

  2. I think the N96 is a much slicker device if not just for the better keypad layout and the headphone jack being relocated. It looks like a more solid build as well (less plastic feel maybe). Still very disappointed in no xenon flash though. That would have been the icing on the cake with the N96. I’ll consider the N96 if they come out with a NA version soon after launch even though I am still happy as can be with the N95-4.

  3. I am a N95-2 owner and the N96 has good specs but I prefer the more manly brick look of the N95 over the N96. Xenon flash is upsetting as they incorporated that into the N82 and loss of all black seems to make it look kind of tacky imo ;/.
Happy with my device at the moment however, just waiting for my operator branded version of v20.

  4. I am extremely disappointed with the battery size and lack of 3D acceleration… wtf! Especially with the game buttons they include… they are taking a step backwards for the platform.

I actually like the dual LED idea, I think it will perform much better than you expect, and with one of the leds on for movie mode… really makes movie mode awesome for low light situations.

  5. deadlock: I do like the LED for movie mode, but why couldn’t they give us a LED for movie mode and a xenon flash for photos. I too do not understand why they decreased the battery size from the N95-4. Apparently from what early reviewers are saying though is they are getting as good of performance out of the N96 with the smaller battery as the N95-2 and 4 are getting out of the bigger battery.

  6. The numeric buttons on the N96 look very flat. Are you going to be able to differentiate between them by touch? I.E. can you feel which buttons to press without looking at them?
