    Ricky,

I used to feel that way as well, but this version might have won me over. As it was, with the older versions all of the page manipulation was done on their servers, now it seems to be done locally. This is a key move, speed gains are HUGE. Even using WiFi the S60 browser takes much longer to load and fully render pages. Now I do realize that Opera isn’t fully rendering them, but the speed gain is completely worth it. Plus the speed dial feature and the desktop browser sync are very nice touches I’ve enjoyed. That being said tabbed browsing is very nice and so is the fully set of web tools that comes with the S60 browser (flash, good javascript support, etc…). I’m going back and forth right now as to what wins the overall crown for my personal use, but I really encourage everyone to take a look, give it a weeks trial or so. Learn how to use its features and then make your choice.

As an end-user, I don’t really care about abstract developer notions like whether an app is native or java-based, or how the page is translated into obml and isn’t html. All I care about is the end user experience. Now, the user experience for most java apps is pretty nasty, but mini’s different. If it loads pages faster, and I get access to newer versions for free with better features, I’ll opt for that.

I’ve got an N80 that’s a bit old but I’m not planning on upgrading just yet. The S60 browser in it won’t be getting new features or new versions beyond infrequent bug-fixes. With that, it’s pretty good to have alternatives.

From a usability perspective, I’m pretty infatuated with this Russian modded version of mini. It’s based on mini 2.x, but features like the ability to open twenty tabs, an ftp client, a feature-rich download manager, it’s pretty sweet. Kinda steep learning curve though, it’s got a ton of features but it takes a little while to figure out how everything’s done and get it customized the way you’d want it to work.

@Qasim – I’m an end user, too. I dislike Java apps on my S60 because of the end user experience – they take FOREVER to load, and have to ask what access point I want to use each time, and whether it’s ok for them to access the internet (it’s a freakin web browser, of COURSE it’s ok to get online!).

Clearly there are some phones, such as your N80, for which Opera Mini is a great fit. I just personally don’t care for it.

I installed Opera Mini 4.1 on my fiance’s SE W580i, and I have to say it’s quite nice if you’ve got a dumb phone. I do still prefer the S60 browser, but just barely – Opera Mini is now a real contender.

Whatever happened to Opera Mobile, anyway?
