S60 At Web 2.0 Conference

S60 At Web 2.0 Conference

Last week the S60 team (at least most of them) were at the Web 2.0 conference held in San Francisco. The Web 2.0 conference, according to the brochure, is a conference that ‘whether you’re a designer, developer, marketer, entrepreneur, business strategist, or technologist, whether you’re a geek or suit who ‘gets it,’ if you’re looking to understand and harness the changes afoot now, this is your conference. Join 10,000 other builders of the next-generation Web for insights both inspirational and practical.

Sounds cool, even if half of the people online hate the ‘term’ Web 2.0, it’s the spirit and ideas of the conference that make it happen. I also noticed, from the brochure, that from the mobile handset OS and device industry, Nokia is the only handset manufacturer, and S60 and Microsoft are the only OS representatives there. Google, UIQ, and Apple didn’t pony up to be a sponsor. Neither did Motorola (surprise), or Sony Ericsson or Samsung or the rest.

Anywho…easily the coolest thing that S60 showed off was the RC Truck, remotely controlled, Wii-style, by an N95 with the built-in accelerometer. If you’ve no idea what I’m talking about, here’s the video:

Also, S60 announced updates to the Web Runtime widget platform, allowing for the creation of personal and context aware widgets. An example of this is a weather widget that uses the phone’s built-in GPS receiver to determine where the user is, and display local weather automatically. Saara Bergstrom was able to corral Ganesh Sivaraman for another appearance on the Voice of S60 podcast, this time chatting about the new possibilities opened up with the S60 Widgets from this new announcement.
