Ultra-Hot: Skype For S60 Finally Available!
Wow, this is hotness. Right on the back of the Skype Unlimited plans recently announced, I’ve been alerted to a beta version of Skype for Nokia’s S60v3 handsets. You can snag the download at http://www.skype.com/m, and it’s definitely a native version just a java app.
The application isn’t 100% ‘VoIP’, as it still requires a cellular connection to make a call. However, chat works over WiFi or cellular networks, as does receiving calls. When you go to initiate a call, the Skype application calls a local number, which then connects you to your contact, regardless of where they’re located.
It’s a rough start, but it’s a start, nonetheless. File transfer is not present, which was a bit disappointing, as well. Give it a go and let me know how it works for you!
I tried a few tests with Rafe Blandford of AllAboutSymbian, and found that I was able to easily call him from my PC, though it showed as a regular incoming local call to him (good news for those on limited plans). Unfortunately, we both encountered issues when attempting to initiate the call through the application to another person on the mobile client. Mobile to PC calls work fine.
Thanks to Gerrymoth at NokiaAddict.com for the tip.
Update: Here’s some screenshots for your enjoyment:

I installed it but from my country I can not make calls. I can receive but using my credit. Chat works fine.
So this is iSkoot, basically, but with less countries supported?
oh man ..this is bad …its like iSkoot ..im so dissapointed !!!
Thanks for the comments guys. Rita’s going to put together a look at this vs iSkoot, with screens, hope to have that up in the next few days. I’ve personally never tried iSkoot (as I’d heard it wasn’t really all that great), so I’m interested to see the differences. As far as I can tell, the difference is that this is straight from Skype, while iSkoot is 3rd party. No clue what that means, though.
This does not seem to be a very elegant solution. I have been using Fring for quite a while now, and it lets you call and chat with Skype contacts directly over any GPRS or WiFi-connection. There is also ebuddy or nimbuzz, but my experience with those are limited.
Thanks for a great blog by the way
this is a java version, how could it be native?
use ‘ jajah.com ‘ direct from my s60. Why skyp?
@aholic - thanks for catching that, thought I’d edited it earlier. It’s fixed now.
Rather stone-cold than ultra-hot, I think. It’s a Java app and therefore won’t be able to steer me away from Fring. Come on Skype, there’s been a WM client around for years, why not compile a native S60 3rd client?
Did I understand this correctly, that if your abroad and want to call home, you don’t do anything with this? Because that “local” call to the server, would already be a high cost long distance call?
Weak. Mostly for featurephones. It appears to only support the N70 and N95. I downloaded both on to my E61. The N95 version worked better — but get this — you have to use T9 to enter any text. Since I want a Skype client for IM that is clearly not going to work. IM+ for Skype is too buggy.
We agree that Skype’s new service is not a true mobile VoIP solution. We look forward to a clearer debate on what true VoIP really stands for.
We question why Skype has chosen the option of routing calls over the GSM network rather offering a true internet or Wi-Fi solution, and look forward to hearing Skype’s response on the reasons for this. Another thing is that the solution does not solve the roaming problem.
Why it is so difficult to do skype for S60 ?
Nokia is the best on mobile
skype is the best on long distance call
Why Skype went with Microsoft that has very bad mobile OS and not with Symbian that it much better
I really feel that some one doing it to make us upset
Please if some one have answer I will be glad to know
do not tell me about fring Iskoot or MI
all these programs not like the original skype
Unfortunately my nokia n82 is not compatible yet!
Simply put, mobile operators are paying skype for not coming out with an S60 mobile client that would kill the cellular market given the symbian market share. Windos Mobile has too little market share to make operators worry and it’s mainly for geeks so it’s ok if they get skype… They wouldn’t pay for cellular calls anyway.
Matt
This is poor…very poor.
What the hell is the point in a VOIP application that calls a local rate number in order to place and maintain your skype call?! just call the sodding number directly from your phone instead and dont use up your skype mins aswell as your mobile inclusive mins!
AVOID AVOID AVOID!
This is 2008, and they come up with… this? What a total embarrassment. Now either they’re totally incompetent, which I highly doubt, or else they’re doing everything in their power to come up with an excuse for not making it happen, for whatever (good) reason.
