What Happens When We Run Out Of Nseries?

While preparing my Nokia N35 April Fools’ joke, I had to come up with a product number that was unlikely to be real in the future, and that was also slightly believable. The N35 came about because I noticed that Nokia was currently only using the N7x, N8x, and N9x for Nseries thus far. This promped me to consider, how many Nseries do we have left, and what comes next?

Currently we have the N70, N71, N72, N73, N75, N76, N77, N78, N80, N81, N82, N90, N91, N92, N93, N95, N96 (did I miss any?). That only leaves 12 more ’slots’. At the rate that Nokia is announcing Nseries devices, those 12 slots will run out likely by the end of 2009, if not before. So what comes next?

Personally, I can’t help but think that they’ll start picking up the bottom end of the spectrum, N1x, N2x, etc. There’s simply too much branding on the Nseries to drop it and pick up something else. I also don’t think it’s likely that they’ll move to triple-digit Nseries, as that seems to be reserved for Internet Tablets.

What do you think? Will we see the N15, or a new series in the next few years?

  1. Well we could easily see them move to the N100 series for the touch screen based devices. This is somewhat of a logical step as it is not only a new product generation but also entirely new ground for NSeries.

  2. You may soon update the post
Leaked Shot Of The N35 Nseries QWERTY
saying that N35 is real :)

  3. I’ll be totally honest - I just don’t like the whole naming products by numbers thing. I understand if you have multiple iterations of one device, but that really is not the case with the Nseries, it’s all got way too out of hand.

So, I’m hoping that they ditch the Nseries completely, and replace it with a name that the troops can really get behind… I swear that part of the reason why the RAZR sold so well was because it had an amazing name, heaven knows it certainly wasn’t because is was an amazing phone!!

  4. Some say that name recycling could be a possibility although the Nseries are still pretty ‘fresh’. I’m waiting for a N70 classic :)

  5. You shouldnt forget the “i” series. This makes many more free slots. Like we now have the n93i, we could have a n95i, n95 8gbi, n82i and so on. Most likely even those slots would be used by early 2009. I think they go the 3 digit way. And for the touch series they will use another letter, like “t” (wait, isnt that used by SE?) going with a 9xx number (huh, SE again?)following the 8xx internet tablet series. So, im waiting for that long demanded Nokia t900 XD

  6. yeah… n7xx and n8xx are already taken

    nice question!

  7. Tseries? “i” iterations?

    SUPER unlikely… :-\

Anyway- I think it’s likely that we’ll be seeing N1x, N2x etc devices. The naming seems to follow a set of logic that befuddles me. N82 certainly isn’t one ’step’ above the N81, and the N96 certainly isn’t a better device than the N95- so I see no reason why we couldn’t have N1x device or something else than N7, 8, 9x. Of course, I don’t see any reasoning behind the numerology in the first place!

N1xx makes perfect sense to me for a TS Nseries device- though of course there will be TS devices without a letter in front of their name. We’ve already seen spy pics that show us an XpressMedia 5800 on a touchscreen device- which also makes sense, I suppose. :-)

Tseries, I kinda doubt that with a great deal of force. I see no reason why we’d assume it will be a completely different range of device just because you can touch the screen. I just don’t see the Nxx”i” thing coming back either. I think Nokia might just stay away from that letter. ;)

  8. I’m counting thirteen free slot altogether, but really there are only ten of them possible: You won’t see a model named N74, N84 or N94 due to the fact that 1.3 billion potential chinese customers don’t like the number 4 since it means “death”, depending on how it is pronounced. Just the same as number 13 in the western cultures - there hasn’t been any phone model, car model or, well, just about anything for sale that boasts the “13″ as it’s name ;-)

    Cheers,
    ///Freak

  9. By my count there are actually only 10 slots left available. You won’t see an N74, N84, N94, etc. I believe that’s because the number resembles a character for “death” in some Asian languages.

  10. The next step maybe the Nokia NX** series
