10 S60 Applications I Can’t Live Without

10 S60 Applications I Can't Live Without

Well, it seems like all the cool kids on the blogosphere are putting together the top X applications that they can’t live without on their S60 handsets, and not one to rock the boat (heh), I’m going to jump on the bandwagon. Below is my list of applications that I install on any S60 handset that I get. Most of it is freeware, though some of it isn’t. Without further ado…

1. Handy Taskman – refuse to touch an S60 device without it, end of story. If S60 was smart, they would have bought this app, or copied it.

2. Antony Pranata’s Screenshot – as a blogger, this is priceless, but it’s helpful for regular users, as well. In fact, I used to take a screenshot of the homescreen of every theme I installed, and named it the same as the theme, in the same folder. That way, when I wanted a new theme, I had a local directory, complete with screenshots. I’ve not done this since S60v3, though.

3. Jaiku Mobile – Gotta stay connected. If you need an invite, head to JaikuInvites.com

4. Y-Browser – Sure, there might be file explorers that look prettier or have some killer feature, but Y-Browser is free and was created by an independent developer – both things I like to support, so I’ve stuck with it.

5. Symella - The reason Symbian-Guru exists in the first place, and it’s ten times better on my N95-3 with HSDPA.

6. Slick IM – It might be ugly, but it’s free and does Gtalk and MSN, with a handy little notifier on the Active Standby screen.

7. Google Maps Mobile – Sure, I have Nokia Maps, and yes, I pay for a month every now and again, but Google Maps Mobile’s searching and location is tough to beat when you need to find something quickly.

8. Mobbler - works quietly in the background, sending tracks to Last.FM. No muss, no fuss.

9. Nokia Podcasting – I guess I can count this since some phones don’t have it built in. I seriously use this as my only source of podcasts, and it just works phenomenally.

10. Share Online – I know I ranted against this application a while back, but using it on my black N82, I’ve come to really enjoy the extra interactivity that the Active Standby plugin offers by alerting me to new comments.

I’ve got a bevy of other applications on my phone, and I use them all really frequently, but I don’t know that I could say that I can’t live without them. What about you, what applications can you simply not live without on your S60 handset?

  1. Well, those are nine apps. How about one more, as promised in the headline ;-)

  2. @onlife – touche. :)

  3. well for me nothing beats shozu, mobipocket, jbaktaskman, skyequikey, ccalc, some fullscreenclock screensaver for which i can’t recall a name now, mrlock, woman mobile, xplore and btswitch :)

  4. Hey Ricky. You should check out Jbak TaskMan. It’s superior IMO to Handy Taskman and it’s totally free.

  5. anyone used Fring ?

  6. I guess i can’t liv without da following… Cellity WorldCALL, SMSbug, nd OperaMINI..

  7. Shazam ID looks interesting but I get an expired certificate on the install… Any hints as to what I should temporarily reset my date to to get this app on my handset?

  8. I wouldn’t find my phone useful if i didn’t have mobipocket, handy calendar, quickoffice 4 & handy safe. Oh, and a few games!!! :-)

  9. I don’t know that I have 10.. But for sure its handy taskman, shozu, mobipocket, y-browser and the large time screensaver.

  10. I have to agree on the handy taskman – jbak taskman switch. Just made it a couple days ago and loving it, plus the free does not hurt.

My top apps on my n82: jbak taskman, truphone (still free), handy clock, cclock (large clock screensaver), CalSyncS60 (I use linux so no outlook sync for me), Nokia audiobook player, nokia podcasting and nokia maps (even though the last 2 are built in, I still use the hell outa em).

  11. To me the most important one is “Nokia Podcasting”. Using “Best Profiles” ability to run an application when changing the profile, I made it run automatically once at night and so the next day everything is up to date.

Never thought that podcasts could be that useful. But that was when I had to manually copy them to my old SonyEricsson K700i via Bluetooth. The memory limit of only 40 MByte didn’t make the experience any better.

Other programs besides these two are “Handy Taskman” and “Nokia Maps” which make life easier to me.

  12. How do you get the jbak taskman to install. Say certificate expired.

    sorry to threadjack.

  13. Also me using Handy Taskman but not so loved in it as you guys are. Sure I use it a lot but what Im missing is no option to Compress Memory. Best Taskman has but don’t wanna buy one similar app again.

BTW why nobody mention emTube….and Profimail….and Smartlight….and any weather application…and…. No now it’ enough ;-)

  15. hey guys .. i’d like to jump in too and give another 3 great great Applications:

    - Profimail (as stated above by janptr)
    - Location Tagger
    - FlipSilent

all 3 applications are great in their functionality, although profimail is plain ugly .. lol ..

  16. Can anybody tell me were to download jbaktaskman???
    pleeaase

  17. [...] an app to install on our Nokia phones running S60 before anything else, it is Handy Taskman. Just ask any other long time Nokia user and they’ll agree. Of course, I mentioned it briefly in the first [...]

  18. ** Opera Mini, as the ‘other’ browser that’ll usually work when the builtin doesn’t (and sometimes the builtin works when Opera isn’t so happy). Love the bookmark/other stuff auto-synchronisation though.
** Nokia Podcasting (agree, love it, my only source for ‘casts now; just wish it would know how to play .ogg’s even if just by firing up OggPlay, can’t get MMF plugin to work with OggPlay though).
    ** Google Maps app
** Google Mail app (now its got offline support especially)
    ** YBrowser
** TrackMyJourney Mobile (for my openstreetmap-contributions fun)
** OggPlay, of course, mostly for ogg podcasts but also some regular music I have in this format
    ** KeyLock
** JoikuSpot, so my Eee can have connectivity if no wifi
** Mini-Blaster, an addictive free multiplayer(via BlueTooth) conversion of Bomberman
** cCalc – great little calculator makes the most of the joypad and function keys

Yes, more than 10. But comment-leading Q was “what can you not live without”, not “whats your top 10″. I’d almost put Putty and Python on the list ‘cos Putty’s dead useful when I really really have to use it, but otherwise sits unused, and python cos so many handy scripts I run use it.
