This is a piece of software that I’ve been looking forward to ever since I saw it demo’d at the Go Play event in London last year. The Nokia Music PC Client is a desktop application that allows you to manage your music and sync fully with your S60 powered handset (as well as any other device that supports Media Transfer Protocol, or mass storage mode). Eventually, it will integrate with the Nokia Music Store, offering a chance for us FireFox users to get in on the goods, and also a further degree of integration.
I’m installing now, and will update this post later today with my findings. If you’re a brave soul willing to give it a run, you can download it here. Also, don’t forget to file any feedback that you may have with the team using the link below.
Nokia Music PC Client – Download | Feedback – there’s no feedback button, but you can take this survey instead.
NOTE – If you are running Windows XP SP2, and are unable to install the Nokia Music PC Client, here’s how I fixed it. Apparently, somehow your .Net v2.0 installation became corrupt, which obviously affects the .Net v3.0 installation. The only way to fix this is to download and run this cleanup file (http://astebner.sts.winisp.net/Tools/dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip) and in the drop-down box, choose Microsoft .Net v2.0 *only*. This will take a few minutes and will remove the v2.0 from your system. You’ll need to reboot, and then run Windows Update to reinstall the .Net v2.0 installation. This fixed my issue completely, and I’m now importing my library into the Nokia Music PC Client. You can read more about the issue at Andy Stebner’s blog here: http://astebner.sts.winisp.net
UGH! Scratch that, I was able to run Nokia Music PC Client and import my entire 54GB music library, but after rebooting my computer, the application refuses to open, and my .Net installation appears hosed again. I’ve wasted the better part of the day tinkering with this nonsense, and I’m nearly giving up.
NOKIA – QUIT CREATING THESE .NET APPLICATIONS!! THEY ONLY TARNISH YOUR REPUTATION ON THE SOFTWARE LEVEL. THEY’RE UNSTABLE, LARGE, RESOURCE HUNGRY, AND SLOW.
**Update** – While there are known issues with Windows XP SP3, I’m completely unable to install the application on my Windows XP SP2 machine. I’ll keep trying throughout the day, but there might be a delay on my review of this app.
I was just able to install it on another machine, and it looks nice. I’ll be loading in some music and trying out the syncing, expect a full writeup soon.
