Nokia N96 Expected To Ship In July

The Nokia N96, which was announced earlier this year at the 2008 Mobile World Congress, is the latest flagship Nseries, sporting a 5 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash and autofocus. This big black beast also includes quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz) and WCDMA (2100MHz), WiFi, a built-in GPS receiver, and support for DVB-H mobile television.

The best part of the N96, in my opinion, however, is the innovative kickstand that’s located around the camera lens on the back of the hands. You can flick this little stand out to prop the handset up and watch video no matter where you are. Completely brilliant. The handset also dual-slides like the N95 but adds 2 gaming buttons to the media keys.

Play.com has the handset listed at 599.99 GBP ( $1,200USD) for preorder, saying they expect the handset to be released on the 31st of July. I realize this is a pre-release price, and thus is inflated, but seriously? What else can $1,200 buy you, currently? Well, the first thing that comes to my mind is the 1,111 Double Cheeseburgers at McDonald’s, for starters.

What else could you buy with $1,200, other than an Nokia N96?

(For the record, Nokia’s estimated retail price for the N96 is 404 GBP ($800USD), so don’t get too depressed just yet.)

  1. I know Online-Stores in Germany who want 649 Euro for it. But many Stores want to have more than 1.000 Euro. Prices over 1.000 Euro or US-Dollar are certainly pre-release prices.

A Guy from Nokia (Germany) told me September as release date.

  2. i cant wait to see

  3. For £600 I could buy…

    1)2 N95 8GBs
    2)3 N95-1s
    3)About 3 or 4 iPhones
    4)A laptop
    5)12 BH-503s

  4. i thought the n96 was going to ship with u.s 3g support? what happened ro will we in teh us get our own special flavor again?

why is it that sony ericsson has been able to include multiband 3g but nokia is still producing units specific to region?

  5. @Jakob - I don’t ever recall seeing anything that says the N96 would have US 3G.

  6. I think DVB-H wont make it in Germany … Too bad!

  7. Usually US prices are right now way cheaper than EU prices. I can buy almost any Nokia now cheaper here in the US than in Finland.

  8. My Nokia E90 was 800eur in last december, its over 1200usd :(
    Pretty normal price in Finland.
Its normal that many products, when announced in Europe after US, they just convert the prices 1/1 between $ and €, like xbox. 399usd vs. 399eur (620usd). Or actually, not even convert, just change the currency.
But that just goes over my head to think that Nokia ships “made in Finland” phones from here to another side of the world and price actually goes down.

  9. doesnt the n96 with 1900 and 2100 bands support both us and european 3g?

  10. @ the guru, I seem to recall you posting an article earlier on about the launch of the n96 and n78. how they would launch worldwide at the same time and would come with the region specific 3g service.

that the u.s would receive a nam version of the phone with at&t 3g banding. at the same time that the euro version would drop.

sorry about my previous post that the n96 was supposed to come with both 3g frequencies on it. that was my fanboy sparking up.

    Answer:
Well, I always knew that in US phones will be a lot cheaper, you need to remember that Finland’s market is 100 times smaller than US, so in Finland they sell for retail price, in US you can buy for wholesale price, well almost for wholesale, its because US phone distributors order 100,000’s phones when Finland’s distributor may only order 1000, so that makes a big difference in price!

  12. Guys, we all making this crazy prices to go up. If we’d not buy the phones for more then $400 then it won’t be such a prices as $800 and $1200 ! OK, nice toy coming out..but, JUST WAIT ! DON’T RUSH TO SPEND SO MUCH MONEY ON THE DAMN PHONE ! I understand, it’s a cool toy and we all want to be the first, but it makes “them” keep such a high prices.. Think about it.

  14. [...] Nokia N96 Available for Preorder, Due 7/31 for… $1,200?! [Cellphones] posted by Gizmodo.com 30th, 2008 Nokia’s upcoming N96 monsterphone might justbe coming out on July 31st with the wha-wha-whaaaa inducing pricetag of $1,200 if Play.com is to be believed. At least that’s what the pre-release price is on that site — Nokia’s estimated retail price is $800. That’s still a bonkers price to pay for a phone, but it’s significantly less bonkers than $1,200. In any case, 7/31 seems as good a date as any for the N96 to drop. We’ll see if that actually happens. [Play.com via Symbian Guru] [...]
