What’s Up With Nokia Search?

What’s Up With Nokia Search?

I remember when Nokia’s on-device search application went from just internet searching to in-device searching, and then with the N95 8GB and N81, it found its home on the standby screen of the Nseries devices. While this is definitely killer, I’ve encountered a huge bug lately that’s really annoying - apparently, with v4.0 of Search, on the N82 and my N95-3, with an AT&T SIM card, there are not any internet search functions available. Why is this? There used to be Windows Live! and Yahoo! search, though I personally would prefer a Google option, as well.

Nokia’s pretty serious about search, and its potential. Recently on the Conversations site, James pointed out that the big guns in internet searching are sometimes incorrectly seen as foes to Nokia’s search efforts, when in fact, they’re very good friends.

Recently, MocoNews.net snagged some time with Jussi-Pekka Partanen, Nokia’s head of Search, to find out the scoop. You can read the whole interview here, but an interesting part is where Jussi-Pekka talks about location-based search, which he feels is soon to be the key, and I have to say that I agree. While mobile search is handy, most often, if I’m searching for something on my phone, it’s something nearby. I.e. ‘Where’s the closest Arby’s restaurant?’

What do you search for on your mobile phone the most? Do you even notice?

  1. Hey,

I use N82 and I have the internet search (Live & Yahoo!) functions in v4.

  2. I was wondering yesterday whether the Search can search for settings? If it doesn’t, wouldn’t it be great to e.g. type in Themes and it would return a shortcut to where you change your Themes settings?

(my N82 is on its way - YEAH BABY YEAH!!!)

  3. The dutch have a yellow pages plugin, including the option; ‘Drive to’ starting Nokia Maps. So search McDonalds, drive-to, ehh, drive through… Search sunny park, have chow, drive home…

  4. @Snoyt - REALLY? WTF, you know any dutch people who’d wanna put together a video of that?

  5. Ricky, maybe you can also try plug in some other SIM than AT&T and see if it changes anything? Long shot, but since I don’t understand how these things work anyway, thought its worth a try. :)

  6. The first thing that came to my mind is that the handset is operator locked, whereas the operators maybe have modified the menu and different things on the phone.

However as you are a guru I doubt that this is the issue here.
My N82 titanium has all the search functionalities such as Windows Live and Yahoo and Yellow Pages (Gule Sider in Norwegian).

As snoyt mentioned there is also an option to set as landmark and to open the maps application from the search.

I’m providing a link with some screenshots taken from my phone.
