Windows Live Messenger For S60v3

Windows Live Messenger For S60v3

One thing about S60 that currently offers a really poor experience is the built-in IM client. Sure, there are 3rd party applications such as Slick IM, but they don’t offer much in terms of integration into the handset. However, many users have found the Windows Live messenger plugin for S60, which has been available for the Asian markets for a while now. This app shows up as a tab in the Contacts application and also allows you quick and easy access to your Hotmail account from your S60 handset.

Users here in the U.S. and in other countries, however, were left to hunt down the installation files for this, and it was overall a big pain, with some regions beginning to charge for this service, and just, ugh. Well, I’m glad to pass on the information that this Windows Live Messenger app has been added to the Download! client of most Eseries and Nseries handsets here in the U.S. I got the tip from the Eseries blog (which, after being dormant for a while, has picked back up and is a definite must-read) and verified that the app shows up in my Nokia N82’s Download! client. I wasn’t able to find it on the E90, though, so your experience may vary.

If you’re only using MSN to chat with your friends, this is hands-down the best client for that, but unfortunately it doesn’t tie into any other IM protocols. What are you using to chat on your unbranded S60 handset?

  1. First as you mentioned Slick, also been trying several different IM klients such as Agile Messenger, IM+ from Shape.

Have also been using the Windows Live as this gives med access to my hotmail account. However as you mentioned operators also provides different solutions. I tried the java Windows Live client from my operator Telenor during my time as a pilot tester of their services. Honestly that was a real pain and the experience was far from the Windows Live from Nokia.

However I haven’t really found one that I like 100% as there seems to be lack of different features e.g. the ability to send different files, GUI of the applications or that it simply don’t support connection via wifi (rarely now).

Agile Messenger was good, but as they were releasing new versions it could make the applicatoin crash.
Same with Slick but only when it comes to receiving certificates (Gtalk and sometimes from Windows Live).
The positive thing about Slick is that it is still free, while the others you have to pay for.

    Other solutions is
http://www.yamigo.com Yamigo which utilizes the inbuilt client.
It works ok, but not the best.
Else you have Gizmo (From Nokia Betalabs) or Gizmo5 (java client). The menus there are functional when it comes to shortcuts, but the navigation is not the most intuitive out there.

My conclusion. Windows Live Messenger and Slick works best.

  2. Fring :)

  3. Its not showing up in the download folder of my N95-1 currently.

  4. @Icyhot1966 - I had to refresh the N81 8GB and N82, but it still wouldn’t show up on the E90, all with the same SIM card, so it might be still filtering down.

  5. i use nimbuzz and i found it very good and easy to use. It supports most of im services and the best part is that it is free.

  6. I’ve got Fring, EQO and Nimbuzz installed for comparison trials.
