Google Updates For S60

Google Updates For S60

Google’s been a busy little beaver lately, optimizing two of its popular (and free) services for S60 handsets! First up is the Picasa photo service, which recently launched a version of its Web Album for S60-powered handsets. If you’re using Picasa for your online photo needs, you can now expect to get an optimized experience when you access it on your phone. Sounds good, but it begs the question: Does anyone really *use* Picasa?

The S60-optimized Picasa Web Album can be found at http://picasaweb.google.com

Next up is Google Reader Mobile. I’m an avid Google Reader user, and actually really enjoy the mobile version, as it gives me bite-sized chunks of 10 items per screen, with a handy ‘mark all as read’ option, so I can plow through my feeds from anywhere. However, we recently discovered that the iPhone-optimized version of Google Reader Mobile, which offers a much more robust experience, worked OK on the S60 web browser, even though it clearly was designed for the touchscreen. Today, however, we found that Google had made a few small changes and optimised this Google Reader Mobile for S60, based on the iPhone version. You can check it out at the same address you’ve been using (http://www.google.com/reader/m).

If you’re a fan of Google products on S60, stay tuned to Symbian-Guru, also, as we’ll have exclusive coverage of the Google Launcher application I found on the LG KT610!

  1. Found this this morning. It looks good, but doesn’t work right on my E51. I can see all the articles, feed names and beginning parts of the article, but there is no link to take me to the article if I want to read more.

Do you experience the same thing, or have I just lost my mind?

  2. Jon - you simply click on the actual article to see the full thing - there is no more, as the whole thing is ‘more’.

  3. I use Picassa and never Google Reader, so I could very well use your same question, only in the opposite direction: Does anyone really *use* Google Reader? Never assume that what you use is what everyone or even most people use. ;)

  4. strangely the google.com/reader/m is marked as ‘classic’ at the bottom of the page. The’mobile’ link takes you to the iphone ajax version. I prefer the ajax version. Its well worth the extra loading time. Wish the S60 email client supported html so that the mail to link for the feeds worked.

  5. The native Google Maps S60 application was also updated very recently and offers a much better experience than the older one.

  6. @Razor1973 - That’s why I covered them both. :)

  7. How I wish they’d make a native S60 Gmail app… :(

  8. I use both services multiple times daily. Picasa is slightly dated and no longer the BEST service on the web but it still very well suits my needs. I have started to move to Share on Ovi but quite frankly the whole “channels” service has yet to show its benefits to me. The structure seems unneedingly obsfucated and offers little (as far as I have seen) additional functionality. The biggest thing on Ovi I have been waiting for is Sync and that STILL is lying dormant, meanwhile I am now able to sync my calendar as well as my conacts to and from google daily. I read ever article posted on SymbianGuru via GoogleReader and I very much look forward to exploring the improvements offered.

When it comes down to it, I (for reasons unbeknownest to me) trust google more than any other company thus far. I am a big fan of Nokia’s products, that is no secret, but their customer service has let me down and in the end their web services thus far have as well (granted they are young and I am excited to watch them develop).

  9. I’m still not able to view this cutomised greader version in my UK based N95-2. Maybe its just a regional thing or Google haven’t realised the N95 is S60? :-)
