Mobile Web Server Updated To V1.4
The S60 Mobile Web Server application has been updated to v1.4 today, adding a few cool new features, such as location support and a mobile-optimized theme. I’ve been trying to use the Mobile Web Server more lately, and was even surprised recently when my wife said she was able to view my photos from Boston before I had uploaded them, saying she found them on ‘that mobile site thingy.’ Pretty sweet that she was able to navigate to it without and help, and a big testament to why it’s cool.
Apologies to the few readers who have asked about my mobile site, I’ve been neglecting to move it from my N82 to my N95-3. However, I finally did so this weekend, so you should see a green light there from now on (save for different situations in which I won’t want it running in the background).
If you’ve been wondering what in the world you’d use this for, welcome to the club. However, I’ve gathered a few links from Antoine at MobileMinistryMagazine.com, who actually used the Mobile Web Server running on his Nokia N75 to host a full-time website, which is incredibly impressive. Antoine was able to gather some thoughts about real world usage, so here you go:
Part 1, Part 2, Live Blogging, and Another Use.
Notable new features:
Location support - either GPS or network-based, the latter of which offers a less specific location (desirable, for some) and better battery life (obviously)
Simplified Installation - there’s only one installation file now, instead of a ‘new’ and an ‘upgrade’ installation, making things simpler. Now we just need a ‘migration’ tool, to easily swap phones, and I’m all set. Jukka?
Mobile Theme - a mobile-optimized theme so that guests can visit on their mobile phone and have a better experience. I’ll be using this, for sure.

WhooHooo!!! Several pieces of good news this day, with some link-love from SG. I’m rocking my personal website off the Mobile Web Server at this point. Its something that gets just enough solid traffic that it keeps me from tweaking it to high heaven. That, and I get to learn more about the idea of being a mobile web server admin, which is a much less stressful position than those normal server administrators.
I’m with SG in a means to share MWS files between devices. If you will, being able to use the Phone Transfer app to share/sync the MWS component would be pretty neat. That way one could swap SIMs but keep their mobile site going.
@Ricky, I hear you. Did you check this: http://blogs.s60.com/mws/2007/10/backing_up_web_server_data_1.html. It’s a bit techy, but swapping between phones might be too
For myself, I just copy the whole Web server folder and then drop Data and other folders on top of fresh install as needed.
Now; how are you going to go and have your guestbook on your MWS not accessible
