So I have my N95-3 back in my hand, and I’m so much in love with this phone. Fully, even with the E90 and N82 Black on my desk. It’s the complete package, at least in the U.S. I just got RickRolled by Tommi and Mark from the Nokia Beta Labs, and I’m wanting to take a picture to upload (which will soon be added to this post). Problem is, my N95-3, with the latest firmware, doesn’t have the new version of Share Online.
First: This firmware only came out recently. Share Online v3.0 has been graduated from the Beta Labs for several months. Why isn’t it already included in this firmware? Why?
Second: No biggie, it’s a Nokia app, I’ll hit up the Download! app on my phone, surely it’s in there, right? Swing and a miss, it’s not. Ouch, strike two.
Third: I’ve got Duncan Sample’s 2D Barcode plugin installed, I’ll just head to the Nokia Sharing and Blogging site and create a barcode from the download link, easy as pie, right?
WRONG. Nokia insists upon using Flash to provide me a dead simple download link. Why? I don’t know, cause it looks pretty? Ugh. So now I have to download the app TO my computer and transfer it TO my phone. Technically 2 downloads. What a complete pain in the butt.
Dear Nokia: Apple’s AppStore is making any existing ‘solution’ for 3rd party apps into a complete joke by making it DEAD SIMPLE to discover new apps, and to know that you’ve got the full collection of apps available. I’m a blogger and I can’t even easily get this Nokia-built application on to my phone, which was recently updated only a few weeks ago, though the app in question has been out for a few months, officially.
What’s the deal? You’ve got all the puzzle pieces, but they’re still scattered around the table. We need to focus on putting that puzzle together – and FAST. I’d *love* to see Nokia push further, but you gotta start thinking ‘how can we make this as easy as possible for consumers?’
And please, for the love of everything holy, STOP USING FLASH FOR DOWNLOAD LINKS. For future reference, every single Nokia download application for S60 devices should be available when you right-click on it, and to be perfectly honest, you *should* have a 2D barcode already made up for me next to it, but that might be pushing it.
