Another non-Nokia S60 handset we were able to play with recently is the Samsung SGH-G810. This slider handset rocks a 5 megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom and anti-shake technology and facial recognition. I wish that Nokia would start working on adding these extra software (and hardware, in the case of the zoom) features to its high-end camera phones.
I’m not nearly concerned with the megapixel count, as much as I’d like to have anti-shake and that sort of thing on my phone.
Other features of this smooth slider include tri-band GSM (900/1800/1900MHz) and WCDMA (2100MHz) with HSDPA for European markets, as well as WiFi and a built-in GPS receiver. TV-Out is also present, meaning that the Samsung SGH-G810 *almost* could have contended with the N95 on a global scale. Sadly, though, the tri-band GSM is a dealbreaker for most of us in the U.S., a market where Samsung has significant presence and carrier relationship strongholds.
The display is 2.6″ QVGA, and it’s running Symbian 9.2 with S60v3 Feature Pack 1. The 1200mAh battery should be good for plenty of use, as well. Eldar at Mobile-Review.com reviewed the handset back in February, and had some really great things to say about it.
After spending a few minutes with the actual phone in my hand, I also was impressed. The build quality is solid, and the slider did not have any wobble at all. The camera lens cover, while a bit oversized for my tastes, is very sturdy and gives a good ‘digital camera’ feel to the handset.
