Scalado Coming To A Handset Near You

Symbian announced today that it had licensed Scalado’s imaging software for use on Symbian-powered handsets, including UIQ and S60. Scalado is a Swedish company that focuses on high-end and mid-level handsets. Improvements include faster rendering and rotation, as well as enhanced image editing features. All this comes with reduced RAM and battery usage, as well, which sounds like a definite win-win situation.

The license lasts for 3 years and is retroactive to Symbian OS v9.3 and 9.4, which unfortunately means it will be for S60v3 Feature Pack 2 devices and forward. For end users, the camera usability should be better, and manufacturers should plan to see decreased hardware costs, which hopefully will trickle down to lower retail prices for better cameraphones.

Symbian and Scalado will be putting together a joint team of engineers to make the most of the license deal, which is good to hear.

I recently purchased a standalone digital camera, despite having an n95-3 and N82 on my desk. The anti-shake technology alone makes it worth it, as I shake like an old man sometimes, specifically in exciting situations. I’d be really glad to see improvements in the S60 camera implementations in the future, perhaps even adding anti-shake technology, for shakers like me.
