Smartphones Show Ep 60 - Toshiba Portege G910 And More

Steve’s up with Episode 60 of the Smartphones Show, this time handling the Toshiba Portege G910, a communicator-style smartphone running Windows Mobile. At 7 out of 10 points, Steve’s rather impressed, though with a few glaring issues.

One thing I thought was neat was the fingerprint scanner, which supposedly allows you to set shortcuts for your 10 fingers - i.e. your index finger might open the media player, while your thumb might set you to surfing the internet. Brilliant, in my opinion, as that would easily give you 10 shortcuts with a single button area.

There’s more to see in the show, so be sure to check it out. You can watch it here, but the feed is also in the Symbian-Guru OPML file, so be sure to download that if you’d like to easily import several mobile/internet/tech related podcasts into your podcatcher of choice.

  1. I do agree that more shortcuts on a device is always welcomed.
However how many applications do you really need to use in your daily basis?

More importantly as Steve said in the show, launching of office takes 12 seconds. That is way to much time to wait.
(Mainly one of the reasons why I choose QuickOffice rather than OfficeSuite on my N82)

When it comes to shortcuts I do miss the media shortcuts on the N95-1 in which you could assign your own shortcuts. In this case it was also the wait that lead me to not use it regularly.

That being said the Toshiba do look nice, but screen could’ve been bigger and the placement of the camera is not the best compared to the E90.

It runs on Windows Mobile so I assume that the fingerprintreader is not just for shortcut use but also for protection?
