Wow, this week has been chock full of new applications and upgrades to existing applications! Using a new format, in this episode I cover the recently announced Nokia Chat, including a look at using it with the E66’s new Contacts application. There’s also news of a new Vista-capable Nokia Software Updater (which, coincidentally, upgrades the firmware on your phone….) and a few other updates. I’ve taken a new approach with this episode and I’m hoping for feedback. In an attempt to give you something to look at aside from my ugly mug, I’m putting myself off to the side to make room for images, kinda like as if I was a real news reporter or something. Hopefully it adds a bit to the show, and if not, please let me know, either in the comments or using the Contact Us link above.

Thanks again for watching, and don’t forget, you can subscribe to the show with this link, or you can download the Symbian-Guru OPML file to import a handful of mobile/tech/internet related podcasts into your podcatching app of choice.

  1. Great job! Im installing the waterbox app soon. Also the screen shot looks great, now I can see what you are describing, it makes it easier to see.

  2. @joe - Thanks for the quick feedback, and I’m glad you found the screenshots/images helpful. Obviously the quality and placement and that sort of thing will improve, this was an experimental first run, just to get an idea of whether you guys’d like it. Glad to know you do!

  3. Hi Guru, I’m watching your show for half a year only I think, and I just want to say that the new format totally rocks. Screencasting your phone is a really great idea, since every time your reviewed apps in the past you kinda fail actually showing what it looks like on the phone. Great job !

One thing that bothers me too since I bought a Nokia E71 is how the new contact and calendar appearence does not blend into the whole system theme. That really sucks, and it makes it feel like these apps were ‘patched’ onto the top of S60, kinda like how Windows Mobile apps looks compared to the default WinMo appearence (and that’s a really bad point for S60 to me). Your demo of Nokia Chat has just push forward (in the bad direction) my first impression. I hope these apps will get more graphically integrated into the system, even if they have to let go of the nice transitions (I prefer to have no transition with a consistant UI than loads of eyecandy with an overall aspect like the Frankenstein Monster ‘build-by-patching’ appearence).

  4. Good work as always Guru. Keep up the good work.!

  5. The new format with phone screenshots is awesome!

  6. About the new Software Update…I have Vista, and installed the new version, but it still doesn’t work…”Critical software components missing.” Any ideas?

  7. After finally catching up with this episode I must say that I really like the screenshots/images besides the video itself.
It gives the touch of being more professional and looks very slick.

I just want to comment on the beginning of programming in python.
Just remember to use either space or tab consequently when indenting the code. If you don’t do that it will fail to compile and it makes troubleshooting more tedious as you won’t always get what the error message is about.

I’m not sure if it works as I don’t have that problem.
Have you installed the .net 3.5 framework?
That might be the problem if not try uninstalling Nokia Software Updater & PC Suite,
    run CCleaner(must install it first)
In CCleaner under Registry press ‘Scan for issues’ then when finished press ‘Fix selected issues’ (It’s quite safe to delete all this)
Then try reinstalling those two Nokia applications and see if that solves your problem.

  8. Yeah, I’ve been researching this all afternoon…done the uninstalling thing, the CCleaner thing, the Compatibility thing, etc. I don’t know what version of .NET I have, so I’ll check that.

  9. No such luck. I installed the new .NET and uninstalled/reinstalled PC Suite and the Software updater again (as well as doing the CClenaer but) but to no avail. This is really frustrating. I can’t figure out what the problem is.

  10. Sorry for spamming, but it worked! 10th times the charm, I guess.
