Nokia Chat Now Available On Beta Labs

Nokia Chat Now Available On Beta Labs

This morning, Nokia Beta Labs gave us a fun little present in the form of Nokia Chat. This is an app that integrates with the phonebook in the form of a tab, and allows you to easily chat with your friends. Location information is also integrated into Nokia Chat, allowing you to send your location coordinates as a landmark to your friends. That way, you can use Nokia Chat to meet up with your friends.

Nokia Chat is the 3rd product to use the Nokia Account service, after Nokia SportsTracker and  Files on Ovi, which launched last week. You’re also able to add your friends, and there’s a handy feature that allows you to invite your friends, right from within the application itself.

It’s a two-step install. If you’re not already using any application that uses the tabs in the phonebook, such as Gizmo, you’ll need to install this application first. Then, you can install the Nokia Chat application, which will put an icon in your menu, but you can also access it by opening your phonebook and clicking to the right.

Be sure to leave your feedback in the Beta Labs page, as that goes straight to the team involved, so they can be aware of your feature requests and bug reports.

  1. [...] The newest application to roll out of Beta Labs is Nokia Chat. It is an application that shows up in the phonebook in the form of a tab, (like Conversations) and allows fast and easy access to chat. In addition to basic chatting capabilities, it also integrates location information and the ability to send your current location as a landmark to your friends. The ability to add and invite friends is also there. You will need to install the Nokia Internet Services Support Package first before install the Chat application. More on Symbian-Guru. [...]

  2. Thanks for the info.
It’s nice with alternatives to the clients already out there.

However I never got Gizmo from Betalabs to really work on my devices. (I had to be contacted by people, not being able to initiate the conversation myself)

    Going to test it out.

    Thanks for the info >_<

The real news to that application, is that the dev team has made a real good choice: Nokia Chat is interoperable with XMPP (eXtensible Messaging and Presence Protocol), known under the name “Jabber”, the protocol used by GTalkGMail chat system, but also Gizmo, LiveJournal, Facebook, jabber.org etc.

XMPP is the only true federating open standard in Instant Messaging and Presence space.
