This is indeed a welcome addition in the E71, I was very pleased by the efficiency. I felt a little screwed at first because I bought many Collins dictionnary for my E50, and this one came free in any language I need (I personnaly donwloaded french and german in addition to english :-) ).

I have one question though: is it necessary to download the corresponding voice files in order to get the words pronouced in the corresponding language ? I did so, but perphaps it isn’t necessary, thus I will remove them and free some space on my phone…

Slowly but surely Nokia is building S60. This latest attempt shows that Nokia has indeed thought about what a user might want with a business phone. In a few years I’m sure S60 will have multiple versions tailor made to work under different environments.

But one thing I agree on with you Rita, is that the applications which are free, should be available across the series.
A Nseries user is equally in need of a dictionary. After *all* its not only the Eseries holder who goes abroad a lot!

Nokia have always been providing more “valuepacks” for the E-series than for the N-series when it comes to useful applications.

Just take a look at the Download! on your phone.
Whereas the N95′s menu was broadened after a while the N82′s menu still leaves the same few applications that are there.
(Seen several discussions on Download! vs. Apple Store so won’t go into that one)

It’s true that N-users also wants dictionaries, but we can get the MS Dicts which offers great value, though some of them are a bit pricey.

There are also tons of free java dictionaries out there so I wouldn’t say that the varieties are few.

I see that in your post you mention that you installed Arabic on your phone, but mustn’t your phone support this to be viewable?

As far as I know you can only install two additional dictionaries at the same time. That being a total of three.

I can see why they have chosen this as the dictionaries are free.
However you won’t be able to use it as MS Dict with several dictionaries whenever you want.

    Cheung Yuen Wong,
Actually I was thinking that installing an arabic dictionary would require my handset to be compatible, but it installed and worked fine, at least in english-to-arabic translation, although I have an E66 borrowed from WomWorld that doesn’t support arabic. I honestly don’t remember using the arabic-to-english, and I have sent the E66 home so I’m sorry I can’t answer that.
And yes, you can only install 3 languages at a time (english + 2 others) but it’s not that bad, eh, I mean who needs more than 3 languages at a time (other than professional translators)?
As for the debate on the other free dictionaries, they don’t come built-in, and honestly having something built-in is MILES better than adding 3rd-party, because it’s more accessible to the average consumer. Plus the out-of-the-box experience is improved due to this.

    Merlin,
I didn’t ask myself that question, and as I said to Cheung, I no longer have the E66 so I can’t answer it now. If you try it, do tell us what happens ;)

    Aditya,
I am more of an Nseries user, and the dictionary is amongst the first things I install on any handset, so yes it would be a welcome addition to any series and not just Nseries.
