After yesterday’s walkthrough video with the E66′s calendar, today we tackle the new Dictionary that has been installed on the E66 as well as the E71. Personally, I find this a very nice move from Nokia: making sure that business users can pick their correct words is a great thought.
I had very little expectations when I fired the Dictionary the first time, but I admit I was blown away. This isn’t your typical “dictionary” and Nokia has done a fine job getting this one.
Based on Kernerman semi-bilingual dictionaries, the Dictionary has out-of-the-box support for Eng-Eng as languages, but you can easily browse through a huge list of supported languages and add the ones you want. All languages are free, and this should allow you to build a nice library if you travel frequently, or speak multiple languages. I added French and Arabic, just to see how they function, and was nicely surprised to see that not only I can see word explanations in each language, but can also set each of these as the source and target language, allowing me to translate anything back and forth between Arabic, French and English. Sweet!
Also you can easily access synonyms or translations through each word’s explanation (they are marked in bold), allowing you to check to see if this is the exact word you were looking for. Another nice feature is when you have chosen a word, you can listen to it in the local accent so that you don’t sound like a fool trying to pronounce it with your own accent. You can also remove any added languages as well as change the font size.
I hope I got you excited, now let’s check the walkthrough video:
All in all, this is one of the greatest dictionaries for S60 that I have tried so far, especially that it’s free and that you don’t have to download separate files for specific language-to-language translations, but just download a certain language and this will handle translations back and forth with any other languages. There is nothing I can fault this dictionary at, so kudos Nokia on a job well done. Now how about putting it on Nseries and other S60 handsets?
Oh and if you liked today’s video, make sure to come back tomorrow for a walkthrough of the new homescreen features.
