Nokia Offers Limited Edition N96

Nokia Offers Limited Edition N96

Nokia has yet another minisite out there, dubbed ‘Face The Task’, and focused around the Nokia N96, which was announced earlier this year. Themed around Nokia’s support of the WWF (the environmental group, not the wrestlers) and their efforts to save the red panda, Face the Task seeks to determine if you are up to the task of all the features that the N96 offers.

The N96 will be offered in a limited edition package, shipped in an ash tree box, with a unique number, 8GB microSD card (in addition to the N96’s built-in 16GB of memory), as well as a few other extras. There are only 96 of these made, and there are only two ways to get one:

The first way is to watch the FaceTheTask.com site, as every now and again the window is open for you to ‘donate’ EUR759 (US$1,194) to the WWF, for which you will receive one of the limited edition handsets. All of the proceeds will apparently go to the WWF, which is pretty nice. Since it’s technically a donation, you can also write it off on your taxes, if you’re in the U.S., as an added bonus. The second way is to watch a series of video clips on the site, to unlock the ‘contest’. You can then enter to win (after answering a question, so watch the videos carefully….) one of these limited edition N96’s for free.

It’s a killer idea, and perhaps I’m missing the seriousness of the WWF, but the N96’s normal retail price was announced at EUR550 (US$800). That’s already one of the highest priced S60 handsets of all time, ranking right up there with the E90 at launch. A premium over that seems a bit too much, for me. Perhaps that’s the reason behind the limited number of 96 handsets - to ensure a sellout?

In any case, cruise on over if you’re keen to be one of the first to get your hands on the N96 in your country, and a limited edition one, at that!
