Samsung i8510 Gets Real in NYC

Samsung i8510 Gets Real in NYC

At an event in NYC tonite, Samsung was showing off its previously rumored i8510 S60-powered smartphone. With its whopping 8 megapixel camera, Samsung has upped the ante to Nokia in the imaging department, and with video recording set at QVGA resolution up to 120 frames per second, or VGA quality with up to 30 frames per second, they’re pushing forth in the video department, as well. As I’d hoped, megapixels aren’t the only extra feature in this cameraphone. You’ll also find smile, face, and blink detection, image stabilization, and support for panoramic photos. A full editing suite is onboard, allowing you to trim video, dub audio, and even add subtitles.

The Samsung i8510 is the first non-Nokia S60 smartphone to feature quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz) and dual-band WCDMA (900/2100MHz), and they’ve thrown WiFi in there for good measure, as well. A built-in GPS receiver and accelerometer ensure plenty of fun opportunities, and FIFA 2008 and Asphalt 4 are pre-installed, as well. This whopper of a smartphone offers up a 1200mAh battery for extended usage, and still comes in only 17.2mm (.6″) thick.

For music, the i8510 is gifted with a standard 3.5mm audio port, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP support for stereo headsets, and stereo speakers. 16GB of internal storage, paired with a microSD card slot offers more than plenty storage opportunities, as well. The i8510 is Divx and DLNA certified and also offers up an expansive 2.8″ QVGA-resolution display.

  • Quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz), dual-band WCDMA (900/2100MHz)
  • Symbian 9.3 S60 3rd Edition FP2
  • 2.8″ 16m color QVGA TFT display
  • Built-in GPS receiver and accelerometer
  • WiFi
  • 8 megapixel autofocus camera with image stabilization and face, smile, and blink detection
  • Video recording QVGA @ 120 fps or VGA @ 30fps with full editing suite onboard
  • 16GB internal storage, microSD card slot
  • Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP
  • 106.5mm x 53.9mm x 17.2mm (3.9″ x 1.9″ x 0.6″)
  • 1200mAh battery
  • Pricing and availability currently unannounced

Honestly, the only thing that puts me off about this phone is the styling and the lack of U.S. 3G. Everything else makes me drool, heavily. What about you? Pending price, will you snag one of these bad boys?

  1. Headphone jack placement is still in the most annoying spot (same as the N95). 8MP Sensor doesn’t automatically mean the pictures will look better than the N95/N82’s either. At least it’s Quad-band GSM though. Fugly design for sure, bring on the US 3G N96 please:)

  2. The built looks nice & solid….
    From the pictures at least.

  3. Wow Ricky, this sounds awesome.when will Nokia do this,Or are they all upto the Tube and forgotten rest about the silent invasion.Or may be they’ve mastered their stealth this time, remember that N93+slider form factor successor patent………….

  4. wow it looks pretty sweet.

  5. this is an awesome phone. Thank GOd Samsung is leading the game again. I just can’t stick with Nokia design…

  6. Вчера в Нью-Йорке компания Samsung анонсировала свой флагманский мобильный телефон, претендующий на звание самого продвинутого S60-смартфона настоящего времени. Устройство станет первым телефоном Samsung с 8 Мп CMOS-модулем.

  7. Sadly, the lack of US 3G kills it for me.

  8. Looks really nice and hopefully a competitor to the Nokia’s smartphones.

Keeping eye on this one regarding the camera and also compatibility issues on the software side, not to mention the size of ram.

Everything else seems to be “fitting”, especially the bigger capacity on the battery and the internal + support of external memory.

All the other specs are also very up to date.

Was gladly waiting for the N96 but even though it has support for DVB-H it is useless for my country (Norway). Besides I bet that there’s DRM of some sort just allowing you to record a short snippet out of a TV-show with that function.
The only advantage then for me is the larger screen and memory, leading to a costly upgrade without providing much new.

Compared to the N96 the Samsung i8510 definitely looks better in terms of specifications, and it even got a shutter for the camera.

Almost forgot about N-gage. I guess that’s something I have to give up on if I decide to go for this device.

After reading and comparing I see that there’s also other things that are missing on this device, there’s no TV-out and lack of flash?

Would be very interesting to see this reviewed when it finally comes out.

(In mean time I guess I have to drool some more over the N96 as I’ve found that TV-out is great when playing N-gage games)

  9. But if this phone is the same as the Samsung G810, where you have the S60 without the ability to install anything, I think I’ll pass…

  10. Yeah the 3.5mm jack is in a bad placement… I had trouble with the n95 as well. I ended buying Ultimate Ears Super.Fi 5 Pro because it has an flat L-shaped connector which sits nicely on the n95 and will serve well for the i8510. They sound great too :)

  11. The Keypad is very reminiscent of the Shine!! With its flush brushed metal surface

  12. Hi, anybody know the weight for Samsung i8510 and it price for Singapore? Can’t wait to have it…….!!!!!

  13. The Samsung i8510 seems to have everything plus it looks amazing… cant believe it even has fifa pre installed. Plus my phones camera is rubbish at the min so looking forward to upgrading from 3.2 to 8

  14. I’ve had one for about a week and my observations are:

    1) It is actually considerably smaller than the pictures denote
    2) Picture quality is surperb
    3) Links to home braodband easily
    4) A distinct lack of information, even the full userguide was missing from the samsung official site despite the quickstart guide pointing users towards samsungmobiles.com (but available elsewhere).
    5) Pitifully few games available and you’d think that basics such as Tetris/Pacman/space invaders would be available.

    Regards

    Mark

  15. US 3g doesnt matter to me since i only like to use wifi when its available. i gotta cut expenses somewhere. smaller callphone bill helps. i cant believe you think the design sucks. it could be better but it still looks great.

  20. [...] Samsung has a new slider on the market in Europe and we’re hoping it finds its way over here. The i8510 is a S60-powered GSM phone with very fast 3G speeds and Wi-Fi, as well as GPS. What makes this high-end phone lust-worthy, though, is the 8 Megapixel multifunction camera with Xenon flash that can record video at up to 120 frames per second. It also has image stabilization and face recognition as well as other features. Couple that with Bluetooth 2 and 16GB of internal flash storage and you’ve got a serious, slim phone for T-Mobile users. And it looks really nice, too. [Symbian Guru] [...]
