A few days ago, I presented to you tips on how to improve the music experience on the N82. These tips involved using Magic Key to launch the music player, but this isn’t the only way I am using Magic Key. I have it now mapped to 3 different functions according to the application I am using. Let me explain to you my reasoning.
The N82 lacks playback buttons, as well as the pen key. In order to bring at least the Play/Pause button (that allows launching the music player too) and the pen, I had to use either the Multimedia Menu key, either the Gallery key. I went for the Gallery, since it isn’t easily pressed by mistake like on the N95, and since I actually use the Multimedia Menu. This is how I set it up:
- In X-Plore and Shozu: Pen mode. The current versions of my favorite file explorer X-Plore and my all-in-one uploading solution Shozu don’t recognize the # key which has replaced the pen. This means that I have to go through Options > Mark/Unmark > Mark to select each item, which is horrendous. By setting the Gallery key to map the pen in these 2 apps, I can simplify the process.
- In Camera: Gallery mode. In previous models, there was a Go To Gallery option in the Camera menu. I seriously can’t understand why Nokia removed this option, since after taking a couple of pictures, the logic step is to view them! So I left the default setting (no mapping of other functions) in the Camera, that way I can easily access my Gallery after taking some shots.
- In All (other) Applications: Play/Pause mode. This allows me to launch the music player and play/pause music everywhere else on my phone (ie not in X-Plore, Shozu or Camera).
Personally, I find this the ideal setting for me. You can use it as a pointer to find your own favourite setting. In order to set Magic Key, read my previous guide here, but remember that you’ll have to associate each setting with the application where you want it to be applied in, in the App List tab. You can also watch this handy video showing from scratch how I’ve set it up on my N82.
