Smartphones Show 62 - Top 5 Smartphones

Episode 62 of the Smartphones Show is now available, and this time Steve takes an in-depth look at the Motorola Z10, with its sleek-sliding goodness. Looking at the ins and outs of this UIQ-based smartphone from the fastest sinking ship since the Titanic, you’ll have tune in to see what Steve’s overall thoughts are.

Also in this episode is an update to the Top 5 Smartphones list, where Steve goes through the current options of smartphones from every nook and cranny, and picks the top five overall. There’s little question as to his top choice, but I enjoyed seeing who else made the list this time around.

As a bonus link, Steve got a rather pointed email from a viewer, and took the time to carefully plot out a response, very tastefully countering each point. Click here to read through that.

Don’t forget, the easiest way to subscribe to the Smartphones Show is by downloading the Symbian-Guru OPML file, which contains the feeds for a number of mobile/tech/internet related podcasts for your enjoyment. You can import this into your Nokia Podcasting application or whatever other podcatching software you may use.

  1. Yeah, I saw that post and that really kind of p***** me off.
(Registered there just to post a comment)

An example I can come up with is that I gave my father a N73 as a birthday gift (about two years ago?).

I had installed Fontrouter and Wang Ma to enable it do input chinese as that was something he found useful to have as he also wanted to maintain the Scandinavian language in case he got text messages from Norwegian people.

I first suggested that I should just reflash it with a chinese version in which he complained about the things mentioned above.

Recently he got himself a LG KU990 and was saying to me that “oh, text input was so much easier”.
What it appears, he have a fully Chinese system on his LG (He probably asked someone to buy it from Hong Kong).

There would have been no difference what so ever if I had flashed the N73 with a Chinese version.

Just because it have touchscreen doesn’t necessary make it better. What’s the point with the ‘tactile feedback’ on the device if he uses the pen all the time? (I do know that you can change this for sound, but I don’t know if you can have both)

Truly the camera is maybe a little better, but with applications limited to only java (there’s good java programs too) the speed is often slow, in addition to that the varieties of applications is limited when it comes to ‘power’.

That being said, he enjoys his new phone which is good.
Just don’t expect med to help him find office or any advanced applications when he already made a “stupid” choice.

Note that I’m not against any phone manufacturers.

What I basically are saying is that I want to be in control of the content of my phone and add additional applications as I wish without limitations.

As far as the iPhone are concerned I don’t like the fact that each application you run contacts some server(s) at Apple before it grants permission to run the application.
That in action, means that you always have to stay connected to the Internet.
How often do you connect to the net when you are e.g. writing a document on your phone?
In my opinion such a thing sounds ridiculous.
(I see the possibility that the application just does that the first time it runs and later you have a file of some sort for that application with the permissions it’s granted. But that I can ask some of my friends about as some of them have / going to buy the new iPhone)

  2. So Mr Symbian-Guru, what would be your top 5 phones for 2008?
