Updates For Everyone

Wow, this past week, despite Finland being on vacation, Nokia managed to push out updates for nearly every crowd out there, including those crazy Mac fans! First up is the Nokia N78, which has gotten yet another OTA firmware update already! There’s no full changelog available yet, but just like the first, this update can be performed over WiFi or 3G, and is recommended. Apparently it fixes things with the softkeys, Bluetooth, video playback, and the alarm clock. The update is not currently available for the N78-3 NAM, but I would assume it should be soon.

Next up, you Mac users received a little update love in the form of the Nokia Multimedia Transfer for Mac OSX. Oddly, this v1.3 is labelled as ‘Beta’, but wasn’t entered on the Nokia Beta Labs. In any case, the Nokia Multimedia Transfer, from what I’ve heard, is completely brilliant, and integrates nicely with iTunes and iPhoto on your Mac. Too bad there’s no PIM sync, you’ll need to snag the latest iSync plugin for that.

Also, the Nokia Map Loader 2.0 application has graduated from the Beta Labs, making its way to the official Nokia Maps pages for download.  New features include support for Vista 64 and S40 handsets, along with bundled PC Suite drivers, so that you can use Map Loader without needing to install PC Suite on your computer.

The Nokia Music PC Client also recently received a small update, though it’s mostly small bugfixes for now. Keep in mind that the big Nokia Music PC Client upgrade is supposed to be coming sometime after the 28th, with support for the Nokia Music Store and some other major feature upgrades. Trust that I’ll be giving it a good solid look when it’s out.

Away from the official Nokia stuff, FlipSilent has received an update, and is now available fully Symbian Signed, making installation a breeze. You can pick it up here.

Whew, that’s quite a few updates, but hopefully at least one of them proved useful to you.

  1. Not for everyone :( I’m still waiting for the N82 update after N81 got one…

  2. Even though I knew about all the updates, there’s one thing that bugs me big time.

The new Nokia Maps Loader 2.02 won’t load within my latest PC Suite version. (Whereas the 2.0 did).
I get directed to the Nokia Maps Loader download site which again asks med to download the same version of the software in which I already have.

Ok, I just tried to use it with the OVI Suite as I have both installed and it loaded from within that one.

Why it won’t load in the (ordinary) PC Suite is still a mystery to me.

(Guess I’ll try to uninstall and then install the PC Suite 7.x again to see if it fixes the problem.)

As for the Mac support, well done.
(Don’t use a Mac myself, but I do feel they should be supported)

  3. Actually i am long awaing for the next vision firmware which includes the latest s60 v9.2 user interface…

and i believe it will surprise me as the old user interface is a little boring after facing it each day since the 7610,then n73/…..

Wonder when it will be available at NSU.

  4. You know Ricky, Nokia is really confusing its users with 3 different ’suites’ namely, Nokia Pc Suite, Ovi Suite, Nseries PC Suite.
Why not have one proper suite which does everything, and looks good too. they don’t need to have independent relationships.
As for Apple users, why give them bits and pieces of an entire Suite. Why can there not be a unified suite?
For a company that spends so much money on R&D, I’m sure a little money spent on this end won’t lead to obsolete models. Time Nokia addressed this issue once and for all.

The good part of this post, Nokia Maps Loader is out of Beta and FlipSilent!!!

  5. @Aditya - I would imagine that Ovi Suite will soon take over and the other two will disappear. I’ve not heard anything official on that, but it seems it would make sense. I agree with you, though.

  6. Are you sure it’s for everyone ?
It’s not for me at least ,, i’m not (N78 , Mac OSX, or even Windows) user ..
I’m actually N95 8GB + Linux user .. and nothing for these things here!
but i think you got me by flipsilent :D ..
