Global Ovi.com Site Just Launched

Global Ovi.com Site Just Launched

Thanks to tips from several people, I’m excited to let you know that the global Ovi.com website has now officially launched! The new site brings all of Nokia’s online services and entities together in one, and adds a few new features, as well. The new site uses your Nokia Account, just like Files on Ovi and other new services, so that you have one single sign-on.

While the Games, Maps, and Photos all link to N-Gage, Maps, and Share on Ovi, respectively, we have 2 new features, calendar and contacts. These new features are encompassed in the new Sync on Ovi, which allows you to wirelessly synchronize your phone’s calendar and contacts to your Ovi account, for free! To setup the sync, there is a really simple option to download the settings directly to your phone, and then you can manually choose to synchronize with the server anytime you please! Any changes you make are synchronized between your device and your online set, and you can conveniently use the web service to edit your contacts’ details and then sync those changes back to your phone!

It appears as though Sync on Ovi also allows you to *finally* create contact groups on the web and then sync those back to your phone, or vice versa, though we’ve not tested that feature quite yet.

Go check it out for yourself, and stay tuned to Symbian-Guru.com as we’ll be back soon with an in depth look at these cool new services!

  1. Nokia is probably the only manufacturer to offer more value outside of just owning a handset. This is a huge reason why I love Nokia and S60 and keep coming back.

  2. Very cool.

However…when I created a group online, it did not sync back to the phone.

  3. Still waiting for the text with my sync settings :-/

  4. I’d wait a while as it needs work.

    - No log in on main page
    - different log on photo and other pages
    - combine accounts area doesn’t recognize any of my nokia accounts
    - start a new account and once ready get a 403 message.
    - various other confusing things at 1st glance.

one day they’ll get it right

hopelessly frustrated … not a good 1st impression

it remains confusing with OVI and regular versions of lots of services (update, photo, music, etc) and everytime i launch one it seems some sort of software update required.

  5. Well where is the one single sign on? I don’t see on the main page. Do I need to log on to Sync (not very intuitie global log on if thats the case)? Does it keep get me and keep me logged on e.g. Share too?

  6. @ac – me too, well I got the 1st, but not the one to set up my phone directly with the sync.

  7. (Disregard previous, it does not log you on to Share, and you need to click on one of the new tabs to get logged on with Nokia account)

Agree. Still work to be done. It does say “Beta” on the main page even, though. :)

  8. Hey look, their online calendar has button to clic to jump to the next month.. now where do I not have those things again.. oh yeah, on my FREAKING PHONE! :) Look, I don’t want a fancy calendar with too much info on it on my phone. But I DO WANT to be able to browse from one month to the next. Its mind boggling that there is no short cut for that (that I know of).

  9. Yes, absolutely it’s still in Beta. I would imagine that, in short order, we’ll see the various other accounts (N-Gage, Share on Ovi, etc) added to this universal Nokia sign-on.

As Nokia has clearly done along the way with Ovi, it’s launching it piece by piece, rather than as a single WOOSH! It’s certainly a nice start, though. The sync, aside from groups, works well.

  10. Out of interest, are you adding any photos to your contacts? I’m busy adding Facebook photos to my contacts…

  11. I agree with you xj.
As a matter of fact I just recently discovered that there were something called Nokia Backup in the My Nokia page.
(Which wasn’t available before in Norway)
So have been using it lately to sync and backup my phone contacts and calendar.

The seamless integration with Share Online from your phone is also a plus.

  12. Most of my contacts already have photos, but not all.

  13. Finally! And I had no problem with my first sync whatsoever – in just over two minutes all my stuff was there, with fotos for contacts, notes etc.

    I already love it!

  14. Three different id,s for a single site??. Why dont they do a single sign on for gods sake??

  15. I can sync my E71 and ovi. however, i can’t delete/add new items on ovi. i can do this on E71 and sync to ovi.

  16. Manu, it will, probably in a few months time. One of the reasons, apparently, is that they bought some of the small companies providing the underlying tech and code etc. and its not necessarily a simpla snap of the fingers to integrate all that, even for what sounds like a simple thing like passwords. Believe me, it took forever for the IT guys in my company to get most of our online stuff behind one password….

  17. So far, so good. It worked perfectly for me, and I was impressed to see that the contacts to which I had added pictures had the pics uploaded along with the contact info.

Editing a series of calendar events did not appear to take, but I was able to add to-do items and so far am pretty impressed.

Now, if only the phone’s sync application would allow for scheduling…

  18. xj..you must either be an employee of Nokia or a Finn…

  19. [...] Symbian Guru – Ovi.com is live, now syncs contacts and calendar [...]

  20. I think OVI.com is just what has been expected from Nokia.. Remote sync capability for photos, contacts, calender etc.

However have you checked Nokia viNe ??

    http://www.nseries.com/nseries/nokiavine/

This rocks. You can move around and N85/N79/N96 records what you listen and see based on your geo-graphical location (GPS).
This is real “Web 2.5″, I would say. Mobile Internet at it’s best.

It is amazing stuff that Nokia launches without extra hype that other companies seem to be lovin… I think this again puts Nokia into leading position in integrating Web and mobility together.

    Keep up good work!

  21. Hey Ricky, I just saw that Nokia announced another virtual event for next tuesday, this time on ovi (http://events.nokia.com/landing/). It seems rather brave for me do that on the same day as one of Apple’s events, so I guess they won’t get much coverage elsewhere…
I’m curious to see whether they add some real new elements or just presents and finally integrate the current ones. More thoughts on that (in German) on my Blog at http://mobileandmore.wordpress.com.

    Cheers, Nemoi
