A few months ago, we brought you news that Nokia was working internally on an update to the dull and deadly slow S60 Calculator. You know, the one we all replace with Calcium. And today, finally, Nokia Betalabs have let the new calculator free so that we can all enjoy it as well.
As mentioned in the previous post, the Enhanced Calculator for S60 is based on the one that comes preloaded on S40 handsets, which means it has to be in Java. Although this might sound as letdown, I have tested it and it opens reasonably fast compared to other Java software and works fast enough.
The user interface though is the best thing about this new Calculator and when you first open it, you will notice how much it resembles Calcium where you only click the d-pad in the 4 different directions to perform the 4 common mathematic equations: + – / *.
Another nifty feature is that you can press * to access more functions as well as Options to launch the scientific calculator or the Loan one. I only tested the Scientific calculator and it has the functions that I regularly use like squares, square roots, as well as Cos, Sin, Log, Ln (press * to access the last ones). The only one that I can’t seem to find is the Exponential.
Although not totally perfect and as usable as cCalc (my favourite scientific calculator), the Enhanced Calculator for S60 is definitely worth a look and huge step forward from the torturing default Calculator. Go ahead, download it, test the Beta release and be sure to tell the BetaLabs team what you think of it so they can enhance it even more.
