Now that is one weird post title, you might say, and probably rather irrelevant to anything Symbian as we _tech lovers, Symbian addicts, Nokia fans, advanced users_ conceive it. But to distract you a bit from the recent N79 and N85 launch, and to take your mind off wondering why the hell the N85 costs less than the N96, here is a nice relaxing story for you.
Last Thursday, I got a call to go pick up my E71, you know the one I won at the E66/E71 launch here in Lebanon around 2 months ago. I immediately stormed out, grabbed it and came back to my grandmother’s house where I was staying. When I arrived, my grandmother asked me to see it. She knew I had won “a phone” and she knows I “work on the internet with Nokia stuff”.
The second she held it and laid her eyes on it, there was a sparkle, and she looked at me and said: “this is the most beautiful one”. I was dazzled. The E71 doesn’t look anything like a traditional phone, and more so in Lebanon since Blackberrys and Palms aren’t even sold here. I asked her to repeat that, and she explained that amongst all the handsets she had seen me with, the E71 is the most beautiful one. Now this is HUGE, because my grandmother has seen me with a lot of handsets: 3250, N95 8GB, N81 8GB, N810, N93i, E61i, N95, E90, E66, N82 black. And the fact that she thought the E71 was the most beautiful one, despite its weird form factor, is astonishing.
I asked her then what made her think that, she replied that it’s very thin, the design is awesome and it feels very good in the hand. She was talking about the materials used to build this baby. She doesn’t know how to use it, as she never cared about mobile phones, but she thought the screen was nice. She also said that “it’s different from the others” and that “it looks expensive”. She then asked me about the price, I told her it was around the 500$, she smiled and replied “it looks like it”.
Ever since Thursday, whenever I’m at her house and someone comes visiting, she tells me to “show them THE phone” and asks me about its price in front of them, for a little bragging, y’know. I love it! For once, I’m not the one doing my Nokia/Symbian local marketing, it’s my granny who’s taking care of it!
