Truphone Tru Saver Could Be Your New Carrier

Truphone Tru Saver Could Be Your New Carrier

Truphone is a MOIP service that currently operates on S60-powered cell phones. Using WiFi or 3G (or EDGE, if you really need to) you can make and receive calls over the internet. You pay per minute, which means that while international calls are much cheaper than using your mobile operator, domestic calls typically are not much cheaper. Well, that’s all changing now, with the Tru Saver rate plan from Truphone.

For $14.99/month, you get 1000 anytime minutes that can be used for calls originating from anywhere in the world, so long as they are *to* the United States or Canada. Basically, you can call Texas from Wyoming or London, and it uses these 1000 minutes. The only kicker is that you obviously either need WiFi or 3G service on your phone.

However, since AT&T offers unlimited data only for $20/month, this is a pretty rocking offer. For me, 1000 anytime minutes is more than enough. My phone is used more as a connected device with IM, email, and web browsing. Currently, I pay $40/month for 450 Anytime minutes plus an additional $20 for the grandfathered MEdiaWorks package, which offers unlimited data, 1500 SMS, and 200 MMS. I could save that $20 if I used the Tru Saver plan and the $20 unlimited MEdiaNet for GoPhone plan.

What are the limitations? Well, first off, you’d need to have pretty good WiFi or 3G coverage. If you venture into EDGE (or worse) areas, you’re not likely to be able to even make a call using your Tru Saver minutes. Also, your phone’s battery is likely to die off pretty quick if you’re relying on an active data (WiFi or 3G) connection all the time.

Of course, there’s certainly nothing stopping you from simply signing up for Tru Saver anyways, on top of your current minute package. You’ll still save a bundle on calls to the U.S. or Canada from anywhere in the world, and you’ll benefit from the cheaper international calling rates, too!

Are you a Truphone user now? How well does it work? Assuming good data coverage, could you see Truphone as your only voice option?

  1. I have been using Truphone for nearly 2 year and it works perfectly. I just recently signed up for the new American Truphone Saver ($14.95/1000 minutes). I use it almost exclusively when at home on wife as the cellular service it not that good where I live.
