Weekend Advice: Choose YOUR perfect Handset, Part 2

Weekend Advice: Choose YOUR perfect Handset, Part 2

Following yesterday’s first part of this editorial about picking the perfect handset that fits your personal needs, I will look today at the offerings in the Symbian arena that fit different user profiles.

Music Junkie: With a well placed 3.5 mm headset, 8GB of internal storage, A2DP support, great volume and quality output, dedicated music keys and a music player that is always running ready to start pumping tunes, the N81 8GB is the perfect handset for the music die-hards. As a runner-up we have a tie between the N78 and the N82 who lack music playback keys. The different N95 versions are let down by their awful 3.5mm plug placement.

Camera King: It’s no secret to anyone that the N82 reigns over the cameraphone market. With 5MP camera, a Xenon flash that illuminates the place at night, VGA video recording at 30fps, a nice set of picture editing before and after the image is taken, TV-Out to demonstrate your images and videos to your peers, the N82 has everything going for it. The 6220 classic equals the N82 in all of these features. The N96 is a very close runner-up since it lacks the xenon, but offers dual-led for better image and video capture at night, as well as a great kick-stand for viewing pictures and videos on-the-go. This will probably last until the Samsung i8510 Innov8 hits the market: if it performs as well as it promises, then you can kiss all these handsets goodbye.

Games Addict: Although the N81 is advertised as the better gaming handset, the presence of TV-Out, 3D accelerated hardware, a bigger screen as well as the availability of the multimedia keys in N-Gage makes the N95 8GB a better overall gaming handset. The N81 comes as a runner up, because of its slightly better battery life, as well as its more comfortable grip in the hand. The E66 isn’t that bad when it comes to casual, non N-Gage gaming.

Business user on the move: Up until 1 month ago, the E90 might have been the dream businness phone, but with a slicker look, more pocketable form factor, predictive input, configurable shortcuts, and loads of software improvements, the E71 has claimed the throne and is far from going away.

Browsing maniac: For a decent browsing experience, we can’t help but notice the UIQ powered Sony Ericsson G900 that features a nice touchscreen, making browsing, scrolling, clicking links a more intuitive experience. The E90 claims the second place here with its amazing wide internal screen, its great browser and the availability of the qwerty that simplifies address input.

Frequent Traveller: The 6210 Navigator is not to be overlooked in this category as it offers Nokia Maps, a compass system and one year of free navigation. As runner up, we find the 6110 Navigator, as well as all S60 handsets that come with 3 or 5 or 7 months of free navigation.

Tight Budget: The king of this category must be the 5320 XpressMusic which looks nice, features N-Gage as well as a 3.5mm plug for music playback, dedicated music keys, and a decent camera. At around $350 unlocked when it’s first released, this will definitely hit the 150$ mark in no time, and even lower if it’s picked up by a carrier.

I know that not everyone belongs to only one category, since we are more complex and we usually enjoy many things at the same time. Both the N95 and the N82, in all their variations, make for a good overall handset, especially the N82 which is much more affordable.

As a conclusion, remember that any phone is not the end but merely the means to improve YOUR lifestyle and productivity. Did we miss any?

  1. I’ve chose mine already :P Tomorrow i’m recieveing the Samsung Omnia :)

  2. Glad to see my phone (N82) as your overall good hadset! :)

  3. Nice to see that there is not just Nokia phones you’ve recommended to the masses.

The SE G900 looks ok. (SE phones have started to have very boring designs).

The only main missing part of the 6220 classic is the lack of an accelerometer (correct me if I’m wrong) and the 2.5 mm jack for both headset and TV-out.

Really liked the comment about the Samsung:
“If it performs as well as it promises, then you can kiss all these handsets goodbye.”
Which is quite true, but we won’t know for sure until it arrives.

  4. amen to this post! I’ve recently had to decide between my n95-3 an my n82. Both phones were able to satisfy my love of taking pictures tho my 82 does have the xenon flash which makes a huge difference too. Granted the 95 did have the slight advantage in other departments for example the much bigger screen, dedicated music playback keys, and support for US 3G. I eventually came to the fact that my contract with t-mobile didn’t end till next year june an another us 3g handset will be out by then, and also my love of pictures and the thought slimmer is better. (idk y just because) which is y im doin this post from my n82, my n95 has been sold an im currently waitin for my new n810 to come in which should be by monday lol.

And alas my dear old n81, i barely knew thee. Had her about 2 months an sold her lol. The lack of auto focus, weak 3mp camera and only having the trial ngage app at the time caused me to give up all hope for her. May she rest in peace

  5. Killer post! :)

  7. I agree with most things, but I would declare the iPhone as browsing king as it has a huge screen and good interface. Having used it for a few days, it excels at browsing, tough lack of flash is a disappointment.

  8. Cypress,
Though I haven’t had an iPhone, I do think that the browsing experience is superior to s60 or uiq. But if you look at the beginning of this post, you would see that I limited the choices to Symbian handsets, which is the main focus of this blog. If we were to go over all platforms and choose the best, we would be at it for days ;)

  9. Any device that runs on both US GSM 3G carrier’s network. So far, looking like Sony’s XPeria1.

  10. And how can the iPhone be the browsing king when most pages don’t work fully on it? The browser closest to desktop is the Nokia Flash-enabled Webkit default browser. Hands down.

  13. Not able to understand why N85’s not mentioned et’all, although its brute competition to all its advance n serie phones let alone the samsung’s n sony’s.
