I got an email earlier today, letting me know that WeFi is now available for S60-powered smartphones. What is it? Basically, WeFi is a freeware application that you install on your phone, and it creates an ‘Automatic-WeFi’ access point. The WeFi service tracks free WiFi hotspots throughout the world, and is also available for Windows and Mac (sorry, Linux-lovers, you guys always get the shaft), with a few social networking features.
The WeFi application on your S60 phone displays a list of nearby hotspots, and lets you know how strong the signal is. The system will automatically connect you to the best free hotspot in the area, or you can choose to manually connect to secure networks if you have a password. The WeFi website also allows you to view an interactive map showing your current location (estimated, as it put me in Dallas, 40 miles East) and the local hotspots. If you know of one that’s not listed, you can also add that, so others can use it, too.
At first glance, the application seems to be pretty simple, and we like the ‘free’ cost involved. Fort Worth, TX isn’t exactly the ‘hotspot…hotspot’ that you may imagine, but we’ll try to give this a testing anyways. In the meantime, if you live in an area with lots of free hotspots, and have a chance to check this out, please let us know in the comments. You can check out their website here, or download the S60 client here.
