Garmin Mobile XT Hits V5.0 With Improvements
We reviewed Garmin Mobile XT a while back, and declared that it was indeed solid gold. The online features set it apart from any other mobile phone-based navigation software that we’ve tried, especially for someone who travels often. The software has now been updated to v5.0, bringing an all-new interface, as well as a few new features.
The new features include the addition of Google Local Search, Panoramio Photos, and Flight Status to the already-robust online area, and also renamed the odd ‘Peerpoints’ to ‘Location Message’, which makes a bit more sense. They’ve officially added support to install and use custom vehicles, which was something we’d discovered earlier, and adds a bit of fun to the navigation experience.
If you’re already a paid user, you can download the update from their Support pages. Otherwise, cruise on over to purchase Garmin Mobile XT for your phone.
You can purchase Garmin Mobile XT using the link below. Note that this comes pre-loaded onto a 2GB microSD card, and unfortunately, you cannot *legally* move the app to your own memory card. With 8GB microSD cards as cheap as they are, and 16GB microSD cards hitting the market, we can only hope that Garmin soon remedies this, so that we can easily use their app without having to use a smaller microSD card.

When quoting “you cannot *legally* move the app to your own memory card.” does it mean that you can’t move the application over to a larger card?
From what I get from this is that once you’ve put their card into the handheld device the application will be installed onto you mobile and hence you cannot transfer it to another card with larger capacity.
What if you from the retail card just put it into a pc and then copy the content without having it put into the handheld device first. That would in theory make it work.
(That is of course if there is no special memory slot of some kind which makes it impossible to copy the data with this same error.)
From what I understand, the maps are licensed to the serial number of that specific card, as a form of DRM.
Is this an example of the flaw with the N95 8GB? - no card slot
Thanks for the info Guru.
Wow, tied to the serial number of the card. It’s like binding e.g. Windows to the MAC addresses of the components on a computer.
Quite effective way I must say, but then again leading to more hassle for the user.
Just read at N95users that many people had problems trying to upgrade from v4 to v5 and some even had problems installing it.
Guess I’ll stick to the Nokia Maps as it is more prone to have less problems.
(Even though I know that e.g. Steve Litchfield had some great problems with Nokia Maps. But that was when he tried to transfer his licenses to another phone.)
Hi
I’m quite suprised that one cannot “legaly” move the Garmin XT software to a bigger memory card, but as I found out over the weekend, I was able to search, download and install (on N95-1) the Garmin V5 from the Garmin Website.
There are countless key generators to get the serial number of ones memory card and thereby enabling the software to work effectively. I should mention, it is a beauty.
Is it possible to use the embeded nokia maps with the Garmin XT software. I am imagining that it should not be a lot of hussle since most map files are compatible with different devices and are powered by the same(Navtech) provider.
