In what can only be the start of something really cool, I discovered today that the LG KT610 is now supported by Maps on Ovi, which was previously known as Nokia Maps. The LG KT610 has been covered in-depth here at Symbian-Guru before, and is essentially a trimmed down (both in size and features) version of the Nokia E90 Communicator. The KT610 packs a 2 megapixel camera, built-in GPS and HSDPA (on the 2100MHz frequency, for Europe/Asia), and a microSD card slot.
When I reviewed the handset, I realized that the LG KT610 has quite a bit of potential, though the lack of compatibility with many of Nokia’s S60 applications, such as Maps, Podcasting, and N-Gage were very disappointing, since the KT610 runs the same S60v3 FP1 as the popular N95. I’m really pleased to see that Nokia is opening up the Ovi suite of applications to other manufacturers, and even more pleased to see other S60 licensees such as LG taking advantage of the opportunity.
I wonder if there are pending updates for the Nokia Podcasting application, to allow non-Nokia devices to use this truly excellent application?
If you own the LG KT610, you can get more information on Maps on Ovi here, and download the application for your phone there, as well.
