Nokia Mail For Exchange Ready For All

Nokia Mail For Exchange Ready For All

Nokia officially announced earlier today that its Mail for Exchange application, previously reserved for the Eseries and a select few Nseries, will be made available for all S60 3rd Edition handsets. The news is great for business users who don’t want to be limited with the multimedia hindrances of an Eseries, but still need to be connected.

Mail For Exchange will be preloaded on most Eseries and Nseries handsets in the future, but should be available immediately in the Download! application for all S60 3rd Edition smartphones. A new setup wizard has also been implemented, attempting to simplify the setup process. The application allows users to connect to corporate or commercial Microsoft Exchange services and synchronize their email, calendar, contacts, and tasks, and even offers access to a corporate directory, if one exists.

While Mail for Exchange is free, it does require a data connection, so you’ll want to make sure you have one setup through your carrier before you use it.

While I have not personally used Mail for Exchange (as I use Gmail IMAP), I find it rather interesting that Nokia is pushing Mail for Exchange through its product line, when they also recently launched the Nokia Email beta, which uses Intellisync. I realize it’s awesome to offer choices to the consumer, but I can’t help but wonder about the differences in the two, from Nokia’s standpoint.

Are you using Mail for Exchange on your current S60-powered smartphone? Will you be using it on one of the newly supported phones?

Also, the Nokia Conversations blog caught up with  Petri Asunmaa, the product manager for Mail for Exchange, to chat about the application:

  1. I’ve been using the Mail 4 Exchange for quite some time and it works great, the earlier versions were pretty solid, they had some push mail problems ( 1.3-1.5 the push would stop working if memory serves me ). The latest ones work great though!!

Currently using it on my N82, I’ve used it on N95 and E70 though and friends at work use it on N80’s and and E51.

I’m hoping with this commitment to supporting it across the board they will add more features like being able to access sub folders and stuff like that.

  2. I’ve been using Mail 4 Exchange ever since I bought my N82 and the app works like a champ. It keeps all my calendar, contacts, tasks, synced up with my exchange server… so I rarely ever have to tether my phone to my PC via USB. Emails arrive very quick even if I’m using GPRS/EDGE.

  3. No exchange servers for me. Am on gmail imap for personal mails and emoze for official ones. Absolutely no problem!

  4. I have been using Mail for Exchange for more than 2 years now on my E61 and it works fine in syncing meeting, mails (contacts i have’nt tried) that is if you are happy with a kind of text-based, plain vanilla but functional way of checking mails. It connects to Exchange server smoothly over GPRS and downloads the mails on the handset.

However, unlike Gmail IMAP, it lacks the option to download only the headers for preview. Of course, if it’s a big mail or has attachments, those can be be downloaded if required once you have viewed what has been downloaded already.

However, if you want to access the GAL or do a search for a mail id, it flunks out badly! Nothing like a Blackberry where i have see people accessing the GAL. Of course, this could be due to some setting by company or maybe there’s way to do it, but till now it’s good to check your mails during the night and reply. Sending a new email is an hassle if you don’t know the person’s mail id. Also, no option of delivery/read reciepts.

Overall, i would say it’s crude but works fine!

P.S. i thought all N-series and E-series phones already supported it? my N95 and N82 certainly does thank god as i cannot imagine living without it on my official phone.

  5. I have been using Mail for Exchange for several months now. Solid is certainly not a word that comes to mind when describing it. It does not stay connected to the server consistently, freezes on certain emails and has occasionally had to been reinstalled. I was hoping that this meant Nokia had come out with a new exchange mail client, but it is looking as if it is just broadening the phones that can use the existing client. Sadly, I rely on my phone to get my work email too much to continue using this. :(

  6. Ashu: GAL is available on my MfE v2.5 - look for the GAL app within your MfE folder.

  7. I’m trying to connect to our company Exchange Server 2003 using Mail for Exchange on my Nokia E51 but I keep on getting “unable to connect to the server” error.

Do I need to change/add something on the Server or Phone?

    Thanks
    Ayanda

    Thanks,

    Regards,
    Vignesh
