Hot on the heels of the last Phontography Week post, I wanted to cover the QuikPod, a tool that’s really similar to the DT-22 or Sunpak Versipod, but still entirely different. The QuikPod is somewhat of a tripod that makes it really easy to take photos of yourself, and it’s also great for video blogging. The reason we covered the other tripods first is because the QuikPod does not come with any sort of phone clamp. Thus, you would need to snag either the DT-22 or the Versipod first, to use the clamp on your QuikPod.
The QuikPod comes with 2 main pieces – the monopod and the tripod. The monopod stretches from 8 inches out to 18 inches, and has a nice rubberized grip on one end. The other end features a standard screw-port, allowing you to use the clamp from your tripod with the QuikPod as a phone holder. The QuikPod feels very high quality, and the top fixture, we’re told, is made from the same material as airplane windows, so you know it’ll take quite the beating.
The other part of the QuikPod is a small tripod that screws into the handle end, allowing it to function as a tripod, as well. In fact, since getting the QuikPod, I’m noticing that I don’t really need the tripod portion of my DT-22, though I clearly need the clamp part. The legs on this mini-tripod attachment extend out, so you can easily get a solid foundation.
A handy carry pouch is included with the QuikPod, so it’s really easy to keep everything together. It fits nicely in my gadgetbag, as well, and I can easily whip it out to setup for a great photo on short notice. You can pick up the QuikPod from Amazon for $17, which is a steal for what you’re getting. Add the Versipod to that bill, and for $40 you’ve got a really flexible set of tools for mobile phontography!
Stick with us this week as we cover more great tools, software, and techniques to really get the most out of your phontography. Also, in case you’re wondering, Phontography is the merger of phone and photography, since you’re using your phone for photography.
