S60v3 Feature Pack 2 on the Nokia 6220 Classic
I’ve already shared a few thoughts on the build quality of the Nokia 6220 Classic with you, but now I want to talk about the interior – S60v3 Feature Pack 2. The Nokia 6220 Classic is the first S60v3 FP2 device (production model, anyways) that I’ve spent any amount of time with, and I have to say, I’m completely disappointed.
First off, I can say without a doubt that Feature Pack 2 is very pretty. There are pleasant menu transitions, great icons, and various small adjustments that make the UI slightly more appealing. Unfortunately, from what I can see on the 6220 Classic, these menu transitions are what’s making this thing painfully slow. Also, it’s very clear that the transitions are created by taking an internal screenshot, and then manipulating that image file in the transition. It’s clear because you can see when it stops, and then converts into a usable menu, and it’s an ugly little thing to see, though very faint.
With the Nokia N95-3, N82, N81 8GB, and E90 at my fingertips, I was extremely disappointed to see the speed at which the 6220 Classic does, well, everything. From loading up the main menu, to activating the camera, to starting up the Music Player, you quickly find yourself playing the waiting game, which is rather frustrating.
I seem to recall that the E62 was also rather slow, and it was explained at the time that since the phone lacked WiFi, it only had a single processor, rather than two. Looking through the specifications sheet on Forum Nokia, I can see that the 6220 Classic indeed only has a single processor, while other phones such as the N82, N95-3, and E90 have two, so this could be accurate.
In any case, the user interface is very nice, and the few extra features of S60v3 Feature Pack 2, such as the new gallery, Access Point Prioritization, and others are nice. However, for someone who is used to a snappy handset, the 6220 Classic will disappoint.

Hey Ricky,I also admit that 6220 is a piece of Crappy device, thats probably the reason it wasn’t presented in th N or E series branding, they usually do this.Especially the built quality is very poor.
BTW, Does the N78 too falls in to the Batch of Single Processor Phones,Cos During transition the Screen is slightly distorted(Just Like in TV)and changes into the next screen,is this because of the low processing power??
Lol’ing so hard at the post’s picture. And this is why I love S-G, we have a sense of humor here :D
Can’t you just turn of those transitions and have the speed of FP1 then? I’m sorry to hear that the speed of the OS is decreased instead of increased in new generation of phones.
If you didn’t like the 6220 due to the single processor, I’m pretty sure you won’t enjoy the N85. It has the same guts under the hood.
@Al – GASP! You’re right! That’s NOT good to read, at all. Anyone who’s played with the N85, can you chime in?
I find it interesting that you just noticed that. This was the case with the N78 as well; though its not because its slow that I noticed that; I read the OS specs about FP2 ;)
@al wow that might be the breaking point for me to go to the n96 instead of the n85 if the phone is as sluggish as compared to the 6220. I’d happily take a snappy handset over one with nice menu transitions anyday
So the N85, N78 and the 6220 classic are all single processor phones!!! What happens to the N79 then? and the Tube?
Also is there a way to switch off the FP2 transitions?
I’ve got to say one thing if you have seen this device in the flamingo pink colour, you’ll wonder why they never thought of having that colour in their list of colours for their earlier models.
Other than that, I find nothing of interest in that phone. But where exactly is this phone positioned, who are its target customers? Any idea Guru?
@ Vladimir and Aditya
of course there’s an option to turn off FP2 transitions on N78, 6220c, (and i assume N85, N79). while on the themes menu, press options > menu transitions/animations > on or off. and have d same or faster UI than dual processor powered S60 phones with dedicated GPU.
one great example of a S60 9.3 FP2 device that runs lightning fast (even faster than dual processor powered phones like N95, n82, et al) is Nokia 5320 XpressMusic. the latter has the same processor as N78, 6220c, N79, and N85. look at how snappy the interface of 5320XM:

im juz puzzled y nokia has disabled FP2 transition effects and animations on 5320XM and had included FP2 eye candy effects on a FP1 device N81 thru a firmware update… i guess d former isn’t a Nseries model? but wat about 6220c?
Hmmm.. what a confusing thread of responses. Some seems to indicate that two phones with the same (or is it just that they both a single processor but not necessarily the same one?) processor with differing speed..
Oh AND PLEASE – I did not mean that in a “let’s start a conspiracy theory” way!
hey. Um this is going to sound weird. Both me and my girlfriend have two 6220c phones. Mine has no feature pack 2 transitions, and is so so so so fast. Hers is painfully slow, has slow transitions. They are both from the same shop. Only my came without the firmware update, hers came with it installed. Other than that, thats all we can figure out. Email me about it. Maybe i can look at my settings. Its very clear my phone is 5 times faster than hers.
@jeremy:
You can turn off animations in the theme settings.
