Ewan Spence from AAS has penned some thoughts on how to load up all the music you could ever want on your mobile without breaking the bank or risk hearing the name-calling and jail time.
It turns out that there are in fact many ways around this, and Ewan highlights some great options. We7, is one such option. It is based in the UK and backed by Peter Gabriel with tracks from SonyBMG, Warner and EMI as well as numerous independent labels. The streaming service works by playing a ten second advertisement before your selected track, and gives you the option to download the track again without the audio advert after a month.
Another alternative that he covers is Pure Volume. Quite similar to MySpace, Pure Volume focuses a lot more on the bands than MySpace’s ‘friend-centric’ setup. There are pages much like MySpace that profile the bands, and a flash player has music links for the currently playing track. The very visually pleasing site offers a much nicer way to browse common genres and associated bands as it’s really set up quite intuitively to showcase music groups.
It’s really an interesting read on his insight into the mobile music market and rather worth a visit. He showcases a couple other decent services, and readers are also posting some great recommendations for other solutions to getting music on or at least to your mobile with a stream. Last.FM is one that many are commenting on, and I absolutely agree. I won’t bore you with details on what Last.FM is and how it works- as it is likely that you’re already well familiar with it; but I will say that if you’ve not checked out the S60 Mobbler app, right now is as good a time as any. It’s nice on the eyes and just works brilliantly- definitely one of my favorite S60 apps of all time right now.
What about you? Have you got any apps or services for streaming and/or downloading music for free to share? I’m definitely all ears!
