Mac Ovi Suite In The Works?
After looking at the way S60 deals with Mac OSX and coming up with the conclusion that a better experience should be present, but that there have been improvements and it’s at least better than Linux, I received a lot of comments either backing me up either negating the need for Mac support because of its narrow audience.
It seems that Nokia is on my side in this debate (or i’m on theirs) because if you go to the Nokia’s Job Search page, type in “mac” in the keywords box and hit the search, your first result is “Macintosh Software Developer”. Hm, what could that be? Well hit it, and you are given a long description of the job that can be resumed in these words: we’re working on a Mac version of Ovi Suite, we need developers, join us. If you want the lengthy description, here it is:
Join the Nokia development team to help us take our Mac user experience to the next level. This new and exciting initiative will give you a chance to become part of the Ovi development team. We work in a challenging and inspiring environment using the latest technologies to combine mobile, Mac/PC and internet user experiences together. This team will help bring enabling solutions for Nokia device owners on the Apple Mac platform, and we are now looking for highly skilled professionals with proven track record of delivering products on time to join us.As a Software Developer you would work closely with the testing, product and program management teams to build the next generation of Nokia’s Ovi Suite for Mac offering. Position with this multi site and high energy team involves taking ownership of the product and working as a part of a Scrum team through the whole product development lifecycle. The selected person will have the opportunity to work on the Mac platform developing desktop applications that connect with the latest internet technologies and mobile devices.
Interesting. “Take our mac experience to the next level” you say? Great! I tried copy/pasting the job description’s page address and got a “the job is no longer available” message. This leaves me perplex. Did they hire someone, or is it some sort of internet/java/something-i-don’t-understand issue with address handling?
Anyhow, if you’re a Mac developer, or know a Mac developer, and you want to be part of Nokia and its new services, then this is your chance. GO, apply! And make a few Mac & S60 users happy.

For a while the Nokia ovi Team said that we should expect a Mac version of the Ovi suite ’soon’. But as we all now, soon leaves a lot room for interpretation…
Well saying something and finding a proof are quite different ;) esp when we talk about Nokia. Example: when was N-Gage 2 supposed to launch? When did it launch?
Wow, hows that for transparency? As Mac user, I need to use three programs to sync what used to be a one button operation on the Palm. Hopefully, the Ovi suite will streamline the sync>cloud>mac process. On the Mac, OVI’s main competition will be Apple’s MobileMe, which is integrated into the OS (just need to sign up and sync). My E71 is pretty happy with MobileMe and iSync, so we’ll see how the Ovi PIMs stack up. The only other thing I need is a bluetooth/USB file transfer method that is not as unwieldy as Nokia’s MultiMedia transfer or expensive and slow as MarkSpace.
Dotsisx,
“I received a lot of comments… negating the need for Mac support because of its narrow audience.”
Nobody (at least the comments I read) was negating the need. Everyone I read was saying that its not as important as other things are for Nokia. Big difference. :)
apparently we have different understandings of the word “need”. By “negating the need”, i mean something like “negating the urgency” ;)

Gotcha. :)
OVI for MAC should look as OVI for Windows, because they used QT for develop the app (look into the OVI Folder). In fact, they could deploy a Linux Version and a Windows CE!? version if they want.
PC suite also uses QT.
i don’t think Nokia will release a Linux version ! because Nokia simply doesn’t care !
and Share on Ovi is unavailable in Saudi Arabia, Egypt and rest of Gulf countries because Nokia care more than it should ! (contents filter and etc)
You know… I don’t understand why it should take this long. Especially since most of the Nokia emps that I know use Macs! I thought it would be a basic cut and dry issue… didn’t know they actually had to hire a developer for the task.
