Nokia E90 Firmware Updated To V300.34.84 – WARNING

Nokia E90 Firmware Updated To V300.34.84 - WARNING

Thanks to the hat-tip from AllAboutSymbian for the info that the Nokia E90, my beloved behemoth, has received a firmware update, from v210 to v300.34.84. The update is available through Nokia Software Update, and thus far, we’re not quite sure what improvements are inside. I’m updating my E90 right now, and will update later. You can also check Steve’s post at AAS to see what changes he’s found.

You can download the Nokia Software Updater for your Windows-powered computer here.

UPDATE: Steve’s found a few differences, including:

  • Much faster orientation switching (open/close lid etc)
  • Nokia Maps 2.0 now built-in
  • Download! application updated (v 3.1.736)
  • Cosmetic upgrade to Music player
  • Update for Flash Lite 3 and Flash video
  • Wi-Fi improvements
  • New baseline for VoIP
  • Realplayer supports FLV format (i.e FLV files can be played directly like MP4)

The main two things that I was hoping for are not present. I was really hoping that the camera key would be allowed to actually activate the camera, and was also hoping we’d see the autocomplete feature from the E71 brought to the E90, but no go on that, either.

I ended up having to hard reset my E90 in order for the firmware update to go through (Steve had already confirmed no UDP, so I was going to have to do so, anyways), so if you run into issues, try starting over with a freshly-reset handset.

SECOND UPDATE: Reports are coming in that this update will break compatibility with BlackBerry Connect, which means that you will no longer be able to use Nokia’s BlackBerry Connect application on your E90 if you apply this firmware update. I think it’s rather crappy that Nokia would release an update that has such a massive effect without alerting anyone or warning them. I’m looking into this further. In the meantime, if you use Nokia BlackBerry Connect on your E90, I would recommend you NOT apply this update.

THIRD UPDATE (10/16/2008) : Commenters have pointed out that Nokia has released an updated version of BlackBerry Connect that is compatible with this new firmware. More info here: http://www.symbian-guru.com/welcome/2008/10/blackberry-connect-updated-for-e90-what-about-e66e71.html

  1. If you do the update, you will loose BB connect. I’ll pass.

  3. I updated earlier and lost Blackberry. Since this is our corporate standard mail solution, I have no choice but to revert to the previous firmware. Come on Nokia.

    Mark.

  4. dont use bb connect…menus seem snappier, oreinetation change is almost immediate…good update if you dont use bb…

  5. i did not get this. Fine, nokia are developing their own mail client but it is still in beta with lots of issues. Why the heck should they discontinue something which is already proven?? Its a very smart company but i think they have lost the plot here on this front.

  6. [...] symbian-guru.com reports that Blackberry Connect support was removed. So if you need it, probably skip that software update. [...]

  7. I just saw Nokia site has a new bb connect sw.

NOTE: You need software version 300.34.84 on your device. This client is for BlackBerry Connect 4.0. You may use the BlackBerry Connect Desktop software for your PC (see below) to provision your phone but it is not necessary because BlackBerry Connect 4.0 is able to perform Over The Air Enterprise Activation.

reading the description it says it is for 300.34.84

Let us know if this works with the 300.34.84

  12. Hi Everyone…

    I just got my e90 updated…. hesitantly…
    should have hesitated..

the battery is dying in 1 day use. My phone last for 3 days minimum and now its already 1/3rd of the bar in 15 hours.

i am not sure what happened. I have bluetooth switched off, wireless scanner off, display brightness to the least and i am on GSM only network..

i think something is wrong with this update somewhere.

The last time i update to the 2nd version… why wireless range dropped drastically… its terrible. my other nokia e series phone can all find my wifi but my e90 cannot.

and the so called WIFI improvement is not there in this version. also, my flash lite is still the same version… no update there neither..

    its sickening…

  14. Hi, mine doesn`t seem to want to upgrade, it`s telling me there is nothing newer than V212.02 03-10-2007

I have tried reloading the upgrader from Nokia`s site?

is it because i have an older model?

    Any help greatly appreciated!

  15. Tom Tom 6 S60v3 – It was working fine on E90, but now with the new 300.34.84 FW, Tomtom application doesn’t launch – nothing happens when I click the program icon….

Anyone else who can confirm or has got it working ?

  16. Hi! I updated to the latest version and my battery is lasting only a day. even if I do not make any phone calls!!!! What is happening with this version? Is this a way Nokia is forcing us to leave this great phone and buy another one??? My battery was fine till last week, lasting 3-4 days but now it is lasting only 20 hours…

  17. Hi,

You guys are lucky :) … at least your phones are working. When I tried updating the firmware, my phone stopped working suddenly during the updating process.

It is EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING !!!!! :((

I would be very grateful if somebody can advise me what to do.
I agree with Angel, It seems that Nokia has decided to “fail” their product e90 !!!

    Thank you all.

  18. After installing this firmware on my E90, the vibration alert switches off after charging the handset. i change settings in my profile but it does not help. only after reboot my E90 cud vibrate again. and once i charge it, i have to repeat the same procedure to keep the vibration alert active.

  19. I upgraded to the same version and have the same problem as Tom now. Tom Tom no longer works. Is this a deliberate ploy by Nokia to force us to use their Maps application? Tom Tom works much better.

  20. i needed malaysia GMXT map for my E90 nokia. thank you

  21. I have a new E90. It recognizes my wifi (Airport Extreme) and tries to connect but it is not able to get any further.
    Guys any suggestions/settings???
    Ajjayy

  22. Yay! Thanks Nokia.

    Upgraded firmware and BB service.

    No more email for me!
