Thanks to the hat-tip from AllAboutSymbian for the info that the Nokia E90, my beloved behemoth, has received a firmware update, from v210 to v300.34.84. The update is available through Nokia Software Update, and thus far, we’re not quite sure what improvements are inside. I’m updating my E90 right now, and will update later. You can also check Steve’s post at AAS to see what changes he’s found.
You can download the Nokia Software Updater for your Windows-powered computer here.
UPDATE: Steve’s found a few differences, including:
- Much faster orientation switching (open/close lid etc)
- Nokia Maps 2.0 now built-in
- Download! application updated (v 3.1.736)
- Cosmetic upgrade to Music player
- Update for Flash Lite 3 and Flash video
- Wi-Fi improvements
- New baseline for VoIP
- Realplayer supports FLV format (i.e FLV files can be played directly like MP4)
The main two things that I was hoping for are not present. I was really hoping that the camera key would be allowed to actually activate the camera, and was also hoping we’d see the autocomplete feature from the E71 brought to the E90, but no go on that, either.
I ended up having to hard reset my E90 in order for the firmware update to go through (Steve had already confirmed no UDP, so I was going to have to do so, anyways), so if you run into issues, try starting over with a freshly-reset handset.
SECOND UPDATE: Reports are coming in that this update will break compatibility with BlackBerry Connect, which means that you will no longer be able to use Nokia’s BlackBerry Connect application on your E90 if you apply this firmware update. I think it’s rather crappy that Nokia would release an update that has such a massive effect without alerting anyone or warning them. I’m looking into this further. In the meantime, if you use Nokia BlackBerry Connect on your E90, I would recommend you NOT apply this update.
THIRD UPDATE (10/16/2008) : Commenters have pointed out that Nokia has released an updated version of BlackBerry Connect that is compatible with this new firmware. More info here: http://www.symbian-guru.com/welcome/2008/10/blackberry-connect-updated-for-e90-what-about-e66e71.html
