Nokia Email Gets Updated For Some, Shafts Others

Nokia Email Gets Updated For Some, Shafts Others

Several people around the internet received information from Nokia’s WOM World that the Nokia Email Beta would be updated today. Oddly enough, we at Symbian-Guru got no such notification. In any case, we figured we’d better wait to pass on the news until the update was actually available, which is today. The update supposedly brings support for new devices (such as the N82 and FP2 devices), as well as support for multiple mailboxes, which was one of the most often heard requests.

I say ’supposedly’ because as of 12:48pm CDT (GMT -6:00), I and a handful of others on Jaiku and HowardForums are unable to get said update. Davis Fields, of the Nokia Email Beta team, chimed in on HoFo, letting us know that the update is being rolled out regionally across the world, and that everyone should be able to see said update by tomorrow morning (Saturday, October 11th). Great, thanks.

Some users are reporting that the phone client actually prompted them to download the update, while others were forced to login on the website and resend an installation SMS. I’ve done both, aiming to install on my Nokia E90, which was updated yesterday, and was sent a link to download the same version that’s been sitting on my N95-3 for the past month or so.

To the Nokia Email Team – it’s incredibly frustrating and user-UNfriendly to roll out an update gradually, to specific regions. It only serves to confuse users, who are now not sure exactly how they will be notified of said update, and wastes their time by causing them to investigate whether or not the update is available. Let’s hope that in the future, this practice is eliminated, as it only drives people *away* from the service, not towards.

While we’re on the topic, this installation SMS process is extremely unfriendly, as well. Why not eliminate the pre-setup portion and just offer a static download link, straight to the .SIS file? It’s frustrating for users to be able to ’send’ a download link that may be instantaneous, or may take a few hours to arrive. If I’ve sent myself the SMS, it means that I have that specific time set aside for the installation and setup, and I may not have the time later on in the afternoon to deal with it.

If you’ve gotten the updated version, let us know where you’re located, so we can have an idea of what areas are covered yet. If you’re in the U.S., based on the past, it’s likely safe to assume that we’re towards the bottom of the list.

UPDATE: First off, it appears as though everyone is now seeing this new version, which is great. Also, I’ve been in touch personally with Davis Fields, who is heading this thing up, which is, again, great. It’s nice to see two-way communication on these new services. To be truthful, I’m a *huge* fan of this Nokia Email Beta. It’s much more visually friendly than the built-in nonsense, and I *really* love that I can set it to automatically download the entire message when using IMAP, rather than just the header.

  1. Strangely enough, when I log into the website and click the link for them to re-send the installation SMS, my phone alerts me (vibrates) that I have a message, but there is no message notification icon or message in my inbox. WTF?! Has anyone else experienced that?

BTW, I’m using a N95-3 and located in the US.

  2. Jeremy, I am getting the exact same thing on my E71.

  3. Ricky, oddly enough this was available to me at midnight. I logged into my account online and noticed a “upgrade available” image. You can see the screenshot in the article i posted over at symbian-addict.com. It doesn’t really jump out at you. Ps i’m in california everyone.

  4. In Toronto Canada here and no notification via email as of yet – havent logged into the Nokia site to check if I can get it from there as of yet

  5. email.nokia.com is completely down. My location: Amsterdam, so my IP address is recognised as being from The Netherlands.

  6. Ditto on what symbianism said.
Still in Toronto Canada as mentioned above.
Also noticed that according to the Nokia Beta Labs site Nokia Email was “Published on Beta Labs: August 8, 2008″ so the update hasn’t hit there as of yet either.

  7. Nothing in it for India also

  8. email.nokia.com had been down most of the day for me, but at around midnight PDT it is up and available. However, the Nokia Email client isn’t able to fetch information from Gmail for some reason. Go figure.

  9. Hello from Germany,
just downloaded the new version. I did not get an e-mail notification. Looks slightly different from the previous one.
I hope it works better with GMail.

    Greetings
    Tom

  10. Hi, I just received the Nokia email service update.
Received the install text link, installed, working great.

    Located in Belfast, Ireland.

    Regards,
    Darren.

  11. Nokia email sucks anyways. Too slow and clunky. Plus no HTML. Profimail rocks. light weight and feature rich. Anybody know any other email client that supports HTML mails?

  12. I visited the Nokia website this morning after reading about the update on another site. Was able to have the sms sent to my phone, downloaded and got it up and running in a few minutes time on my e71. The new version is much better than the old version I had (not sure what the old version was, but it was capable of handling multiple email accounts as well).

  13. Takes ages to install, but otherwise working. Why do routine things from Nokia have to be such a pain? I am talking about a decent email client, PC suite, etc. I mean they are not ROCKET SCIENCE are they, when you are virtually controlling the platform

  14. [...] E71, N95-3, and N96, so that whatever phone I use that day, I’m constantly connected. While I ragged on the recent upgrade situation, the fact is that the service itself works awesome. I get my email nearly instantly, and I’ve [...]
