Symbian Smartphone Show Recap Of Tools
In this article, Alan Buckley aka Auntiewiv, explains to us how he got on with reporting from the Symbian Smartphone Show, the tools he used, as well as the difficulties he had.
When the Guru asked for help covering the Symbian Smartphone Show, I thought “Hey, I could do that!”. After all, I am lucky enough to own not only an N82 with one of the best cameras in the Nseries range, but an E71 as well, a very capable handset when it comes to communication. So it was, armed with my “weapons of mass media”, that I entered the Symbian Smartphone Show ready for battle.
Before the show I had installed Kyte.TV onto both handsets with the intention of uploading to my Kyte.TV channel. A flash embed would then allow my pictures and video to be viewed ‘live’ on the Symbian-Guru website. Kyte.TV, if you don’t already know, is a free service which allows anyone with access to the internet to upload video either live through a webcam or as in my case though the camera in my N82. Sadly, for some reason, both my handsets were unable to connect, possibly because of bandwidth problems due to the mass numbers of S60 handsets all trying to access the internet at the same time.
Thankfully I had an old friend with me, Share on Ovi. I had already set up a Smartphone Show channel on Ovi the night before and within minutes, I was uploading pictures and video. Share Online, as everyone knows, is a relatively simple application which sends pictures and video to the main Ovi website where it can then be shared with the world. I have only two suggestions for the next version of Share.
- The ability to set tags for pictures before they are taken. If I could set the name of the location or occasion name before I take the picture it would save time later when uploading to Ovi. Imagine be able to set your camera up before going on holiday knowing that all pictures would be tagged the same.
- A dialog after the image is taken asking if I want to upload the picture straight away. Maybe even the ability to turn this on permanently in the camera menu so the upload is performed automatically letting me pick the Channel I want to upload to like Shozu.
My other secret weapon was Nokia Email Beta 3. This little marvel sat quietly on my E71 keeping me in touch throughout the day with the various contacts I had arranged to meet as well as keeping Ricky up to date with developments. The new beta released a couple of weeks ago is possibly one of the best email clients I’ve used, and believe me I tried them all! The application delivered mail promptly during the day and I’m happy to report that the crashes that sometimes dogged the original beta now seem to be cleared up. Once HTML support is added in the future I would seriously consider paying to use Nokia Email assuming a reasonable cost.
So despite initial problems I was able to record and share pictures and video, communicate effectively and listen to my favorite tunes and podcasts on the way home. If this is where we are now then I can’t wait for next year’s Symbian Smartphone Show.
Again, big thanks to Alan for covering the show for us, you can keep up with Alan at his blog, S60Life.com.

If you enable "Show captured image" in the camera settings, every image you take will be shown with the icon shortcuts overlaid. Select the "Globe" thingy to upload to whatever service you have set as default in "Share Online".
So you wish #2 is at least partially possible - works like a charm on my N82
