The Guru’s Guide To S60 5th Edition – PIM

The Guru's Guide To S60 5th Edition - PIM

With the announcement of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, we also got our first view of S60 5th Edition. Surely this brings many cool changes, but the press release did not offer many details, nor did most of the screenshots of the new device. Luckily, over at Forum Nokia, the full SDK is now available for download, along with an emulator, which is basically an online version of the core operating system.

I downloaded the SDK and have been playing around a bit. While it’s not the full version that you’ll see on the 5800 XpressMusic (clearly there are pieces that were created specifically for that device), the S60 5th Edition emulator will give you an idea of what’s changed and what it’s like to play with a fully-functional device. I’ve put together several video walkthroughs of some features of this new S60 5th Edition user interface. If there are particular features that you’d like to see explored, please let me know in the comments.

Tomorrow I’ll be showing off the various input methods and a few neat aspects to those, so be sure to check back!

  1. Great walkthrough, contacts app look fine, but in the calendar I would have preferred to have seen the method for entering appointments etc to mirror the E71/E66, which features much better use of the screen real estate, instead we have the same old entry method dating back to Series60 year dot.

  2. I was hoping for an update in the PIM functionality. It’s kind of outdated and missing a lot of recent must-haves for a PIM.

If you could check the emulator (or SDK) for two things: e-mail functionality and active standby customization, that would be quite interesting.

  3. @Renegade Fanboy – the Active Standby options are in the pipeline for a feature, and I tried to give the email functions a go, but was unable to get the emulator to connect to my inbox. I’m obviously working to get my hands on an actual 5800 XpressMusic, and will most certainly do an in-depth article on the email features, though from what I can tell on the emulator, it’s largely the same. I’ll keep tinkering, though.

  4. How’s the video editor? I haven’t seen any screenshots yet.

  5. Crushing my hopes for an update in email! :-)
Thanks, I’m waiting for the video on Active Standby.

  6. Ricky, can you show how the device handles message and email alerts, especially how it reacts during typing
of pressing the screen? I don’t like how there’s no visible alert in S60 3rd Edition. If you’re really busy actively pressing buttons, your key presses could deactivate the audible and vibration message and email alerts, many times without you being aware. I like really like Android’s system of an alerts pull down shade, and really hoped for a better solution from Nokia.

  7. @Christexaport – yes, I saw your comment earlier, and have an entire episode over the messaging features, just for you. :) You’ll just have to stay tuned to find out. ;)

  8. Do Series 60 v3 apps work with v5?

  9. @ Calvin
Most apps will, or rather most are supposed to work with v5. But I suppose java programs are susceptible.

  10. Calvin – I’ve not been able to install any applications to the emulator, but again, it’s just an emulator. Obviously I was able to install the Symbian-Guru theme, so some things work. :)

  11. I’ll be stalking this site until I see the messaging alerts handling. Thanks Guru! Can you tell from the SDK any features we might see in the upcoming Nseries?

  12. Hey Ricky,

I’m interested most in the landscape full finger keyboard experience, IMAP-IDLE email (and whether the auto-reconnect bug is present in v5 or not), text messaging, copy/paste features, web browsing and finger touch operation.

Can’t wait for a more detailed review!

  13. Nick – Keep in mind, this is not an actual device, but simple the emulator, which runs in a window on my laptop. As noted above, I’m actually having issues getting it to connect for email, and clearly I won’t be able to show you any finger touch operations.

  14. Rick’s happy as his theme worked on the SDK :D

I hope they have made changes to the Standby options, the icons. I am hoping that the user will be allowed more customization than just a change in themes, and ringtones.

  15. oh BTW does it have copy and paste options… last I heard iPhone users were complaining a lot about not having it. :P

  16. Did you try installing CorePlayer on S60 5th edition? Its the main application media freaks would like to know about before they start thinking about getting a 5th edition device.
