Traveling With The Guru – Hardware

Traveling With The Guru - Hardware

So, I’ve been out here for a few days now, spending today trekking around San Francisco, CA, till 7p tonite. With the arsenal of phones that I’ve brought, I’m sure you’re wondering what pieces of my kit I’ve found to be mandatory, and what’s turned out to be better left at home. To be quite honest, I’m rather surprised, myself, at the results.

First off – the phones. Believe it or not, save for the airport waiting for our flight to head out to California, I have used my Nokia N95-3 exclusively. It has, thus far, navigated, photographed, video’d, tethered, entertained, woken up, and geotagged. It’s completely awesome to me that I can literally do anything that I need to do, all from this phone that fits in my pocket. San Francisco has a great HSDPA network with AT&T, even covering out to Alcatraz Island and back, which impressed me quite a bit.

Aside from the phone, I’ve found two other pieces of kit to be must-haves, without question. The first, as you might imagine, is the Proporta Mobile Device Charger. I’ve been using the same charge from this little white miracle since Wednesday, and it’s kept my N95-3 rocking-and-rolling throughout the day with little pick-me-ups. It’s small enough that I can comfortably hold both the phone and the Proporta in one hand, and it charges *while* I’m using the phone, which is still my favorite feature.

The Quikpod has also turned out to be a heaven-send, as well, allowing Mrs. Guru and I to have ourselves in the photos of this cool city without having to flag some stranger down and hand them our camera. Unfortunately, the utility of this tool is limited to use with our stand-alone digicam, since the N95-3 doesn’t have the standard camera mount screw, and since Nokia is too daft to realize the usefulness of the clip from its DT-22 and update it to properly hold its latest cameraphones.

To be completely honest, these three things are all I’ve needed thus far. Tomorrow we’ll be in the car alot, so the N96’s 16GB internal storage is likely to get a good workout, but it’ll be sans SIM card, most likely. I just can’t fall out of love with my precious N95-3.

If you’ve been traveling, what hardware tools do you find indispensable? Have you checked out the Proporta Mobile Device Charger or the Quikpod? Why the heck not?!

P.S. – you can check out all my photos (and Mrs. Guru’s) from the trip at my Share on Ovi channel. The ones taken with my N95-3 are all geotagged so you can even see WHERE I took them!
