Unannounced US 3G Nokia N79 Passes FCC

When Nokia announced the N79 back in August, there was no mention of a version that would work with AT&T’s 3G network here in the United States. However, the FCC is a terrible secret-keeper, and has revealed the RM-350, which is, in fact, the Nokia N79, sporting dual-band 3G (850/1900MHz) support for AT&T’s high-speed network.

If you’re not familiar, this candybar smartphone features S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2, a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with Carl Zeiss optics and dual-LED flash, as well as user-changeable XpressOn covers that pack a chip that automatically installs and activates a color-matched them on the phone. Pretty nifty stuff, the Nokia N79 is supposed to ship during Q4 2008, priced at EUR350 (US$521) before taxes and subsidies.

  1. Interesting. Why couldnt ATT just get the N85 instead :P. Ah well cant always get what I want.

  2. Tim, 1) there is no guarantee that AT&T would get it - Nokia has other AT&T compatible phones that AT&T is not carrying 2) if they do get the N79 - AWESOME!! And they would get N79 over the N85 because N79 is significantly cheaper and.. well.. US is the land of mostly cheap phones (with couple of notable exeptions).

AT&T is getting the 6650 so that could either 1) give us hope of Nokia finally starting to crack that nut 2) mean that AT&T is not going to bother with another S60 very soon. I sure hope its the former.

Btw, sinmply converting the Euro price of 350 to US$ at todays exchange rate is probably a bit misleading as it is now cheaper to buy Nokias here than it is in Europe.

  3. This is great news. I’m not interested in the N79 nor do I care if AT&T picks it up (though that would be awesome), but what excites me is that this proves that Nokia is committed to producing NAM versions of all of its Nseries phones. THAT is awesome. Regardless of carrier pickup, Nokia is cranking out NAM versions of everything now. The N96, the 5800, the N79, the N85. I couldn’t be happier, since this means any future S60 phone will more than likely have a NAM counterpart, especially if it’s Nseries.

  4. Dare I say it what is the great difference between the N79 and the N85 . other than the OLED screen. They seem to have the same everything else.
Is it not attractive if its even cheaper ?

  5. n 79 is a gr8 phone and its user’s choice whether to pay 150 bucks more only 4 omled especially when 150 usd means a lot. 2 me, this phone provides far more value 4 money than any other nok phone right nw. There is absolutely no doubt abt it as far as i am concerned!
