AT&T 6650 Lets You Choose Your Keypad Backlight

When I first got ahold of the Nokia 7900, one of my absolute favorite features was the ability for the user to manually choose the color of the keypad backlight. It’s such a small feature, and yet it completely allows the user to easily customize the phone to match his or her mood at the moment, with just a few clicks. It’s just…brilliant.

We already knew that the Nokia 6650 has this feature, but being able to use it - on an S60-powered smartphone, is really really cool. Even better that you can use this for notification lights, as well. There are only 7 options (compared with over 45 options on the 7900 Prism), but that’s enough for me. The menu is slightly hidden in the Personalizations submenu, but once you’ve found it, your world is brightened. Now, if I have a green theme, I can have matching green keypad backlights. If I switch to the Symbian-Guru theme, I can have matching blue ones.

The three touch-sensitive keys on the front of the phone correspond to the color used inside, as well, which is a nice touch. The notification feature allows you to specify the color that should flash when you have an incoming call, though unfortunately, you can only choose a single color at a time, or you can have the whole lot of them cycle through. I would like to see, in future devices, the ability to select, say, two or three different colors to cycle through, instead of all of them.

In any case, this is an excellent touch by Nokia, and one that I hope and pray we see in more S60-powered smartphones in the future. It’s simply brilliant, and they’ve now demonstrated that it’s not only possible to implement, but on one of the cheapest S60-powered phones on the market right now, as well, so it can’t be that expensive, either.

Whoever had this added to the Nokia 6650 should be given a big fat raise.

  1. I picked up the 6650 a few hours ago and the keypad thing was the first thing I tried. It's so small and unimportant, but so amazingly awesome. I want this as a standard feature from now on.
  2. it would also be absolutely brilliant if you could set the notification light for calls by contacts. That way you could choose 7 favorite contacts or groups and for anyone else, it would cycle through. That'd make it easy to know who's calling simply by looking at the phone from a distance, even in silent mode.
  3. @Dotsisx - that's true, except for that the lights and even display on the front is rather washed out, and not bright enough at all.
