Nokia Updates E66 and E71 Firmwares, Shafts The U.S. Again

This just hit my RSS reader, Nokia has released new firmware updates for both the Nokia E71 and E66, as well as the Nokia Software Updater application. The Nokia E66’s firmware has been updated to v110.07.126 and includes new versions of Nokia’s Mail for Exchange application, as well as an update for Nokia Maps. Various other stability issues have been addressed, as well.

The Nokia E71’s firmware is now at v110.07.127, and includes similar fixes, such as the Mail for Exchange and Nokia Maps. The camera viewfinder has received some attention, as has browsing. In addition to updating the two phones, Nokia’s Software Update application for Windows-based PCs has received an update, so you’ll need to download the new version of that before you can update your firmwares.

Note that, before updating your device, you should use the built-in backup feature, in addition to ensuring that you have a copy of any important data stored elsewhere, should something go wrong. I’ll be updating the firmware on my E71, and will report back here with any additional findings.

You can download the Nokia Software Updater program here.

Update: This is apparently for Euro versions only. My E71-2 NAM is not showing an update. Come on, Nokia, this is *really* getting old, *really* fast.

Update #2: Thanks to Candyman from HowardForums, we have a changelog for the E71 update (I would imagine the E66 changelog is rather similar:

  1. This was one of the primary reasons I didn't want to buy a Nokia. I ended up getting the E71 and love it, but the fact that Nokia is so freakin' anti-US really rubs me the wrong way. Things that have no business being Euro-only are always released as Euro-only for the hell of it (like the business card scanner for the E71). Having to wait 3 months for firmware updates just plain sucks.

Whenever I recommend Nokia to a friend, I always include the caveat that "they do hate Americans, so you can expect really bad support in the US."
  2. Hi Guru,
    I have 2 questions:
    1. When I open the link with Nokia Update News (that you've posted in your article), I find there nothing about FW update for E66/E71. Can you update that link?
    2. I have European FW, but no updates are available through NSU nor the "Can I update" at Nokia pages doesn't show any update. Have you any information on Product codes that should be updatable now?
    Thanks,
    roberts
  3. Hi there, i tried several different codes (NSS, i love it). None of them says that there is a new Firmware on NSU. i hope they will bring it soon. Also, what i saw on german Nokia Site is that i could manually check for updated firmware (by entering product codes) which isn´t available right now. Maybe they still prepare bringing it out. *hopes*
  4. You can check on any Nokia national page for availability of FW update by entering product code, easiest way is european Nokia page http://europe.nokia.com/A4577224
  5. @roberts - I just checked the link in the post, the top three entries are for the E71, E66, and NSU.
  6. now it's OK, 30 minutes ago wasn't - I tried several times. Anyway thanks.
  7. Great news that there is a software update for the E71. I'd love to see what the update does to improve the phone except I am a Mac user and I am not aware of a way to update the firmware on my E71 without Windows ... very frustrating!!
  8. I'm guessing since there is no mention of it, that there is not a camera button fix? Perhaps maybe not ever. I'm forever in a love hate relationship with Nokia.

I'm thinking they don't care for us Canadians all the same. Nokia just doesn't see North America as a worthy customer base.

Is there software to hack or change all the hardware buttons?
  9. Camera Button!!!

  10. the firmware isn't available yet..... the nsu says that their is no firmware for my euro E66
  11. At least with the E71 you can change the hardware button-settings in the settings-menu for personalisation. No hacks needed
  12. You can use the application "Magic keys" from leftup.
    to remap your keys
  13. Yay, update is available on NSU now. At least for Euro1 device with product code 0552844, didn´t try others. Battery is charging and phone is waiting to get updated and unbranded. :P
  14. Well done Nokia! It took 10 minutes to download the update (102.2 mb) and update the phone. Can´t tell anything about improvements though as i just finished the update.

I'm gonna give this a try.
  16. To be true, this firmware sucks very hard. My phone crashed 3 times by doing random things in the menu. When connected to PC Suite it´s a lucky punch if the micro sd is accessable and i personally don´t feel any of the mentioned improvements.

And yes, i did update it againafter the first two crashes, just in case something went wrong.

And no, the camera button doesn´t start the camera, though i don´t know about the other problem (upside down pictures or something) as i didn´t have the problem on old firmware.
  17. Did you try a hardware reset then upgrade? When I did the 1st firmware upgrade on my N95-3 it had a lot of the same problems. I thought it was toast. Until I read on the nokia forum of another guy same problem. He did a hardware reset
Turn off the mobile device. Then press and hold “3″, the “Green button” and “*” - Turn on and keep holding until the phone fully restarts. If successfully, you’ll be asked to reenter the date, time, city, etc. Its tough but it works

I had tried multiple update factory reset and even *#7370# all didn't work.
Its fully functional now. No crashes and not very slow. I don't know what the diff. is but it worked.

It might just be crappy firmware but I think its worth a try?

  18. Well, it seems stable now. Don´t know what was wrong yesterday. Didn´t do the hard reset thing though. Still no major improvements. Plus firmware is unhackable for now. So, all in all, not worth it.
  19. all this when I am sending the Eseries phones back to WOM World.

Ha, that´s the advantage when you actually BUY a phone :P
  21. it works using phoenix solution http://www.mr-gizmo.com/2008/11/14/n...oice-is-yours/
  22. Don't be so introspective, the whole world isn't really against the USA! It's just a question of being patient. So far as I am aware the E71 update is still only available for Asia and the Far East. Certainly my SIM-free European model still has no update.
