Nokia Updates Firmware For N81 8GB and E65

As I’m waiting to replace my Nokia N95-3, since I’ve accepted that it will likely not be getting any more firmware updates from Nokia, the news of other firmware updates simply annoys me more. This time, it’s even worse, as those receiving the update are the old Nokia N81 8GB and E65 sliders. Yeah, that’s right.

The Nokia N81 8GB is now up to v21.0.018, though I’m not exactly sure what’s changed. Luckily, the N81 8GB also has UDP (User Data Preservation), which means that all my settings, applications, etc are all still there, even after a firmware update. That means I can apply the update without really worrying if it adds anything significant.

The Nokia E65 was updated to v4.0633.74.00, and improvements include WiFi enhancements, as well as a few other random little things. UDP is not confirmed on the Nokia E65, so you’ll want to use this guide before actually updating the firmware.

  2. I clearly see a connection here that the phones which didn't have UDP from the start won't get it from a firmware update.

I do agree on the fact that it might be possible, but you could also determine that in some degree by the hardware resident in the phones.

My Nokia N82 for instance shows up 4 drives.
    C: (Internal Memory)
    D: (Cache? / Temp?)
    Y: (Swap?)
    Z: (ROM)

As for the N95 it don't have the Y: drive which makes me think that it's something related to hardware.

I've tried deleting all contents of the Y: drive on my N82 (as you don't see what's inside anyway) and found that some of the settings in some applications were reset.
So the Y: drive definitely has something to do with the UDP as well as other parts of memory ( + ROM of course)

As of the N95-3, when released seemed already quite stable (from what I've read earlier) but to postpone / not releasing fw updates for the phone is of course "unfair".

Some of it might even be because of the different frequencies or because of operator specific firmwares.
I know that most other countries has a more operator restricted variants of the firmwares than what happens to be here im Norway.

(Though some of the "arguments" has been brought up earlier)

Some people have mentioned that it also may have to do with anti-hacking measures where Nokia may be placing certain files on the Y: drive to prevent hacking.
  4. With a new E65 update, I guess it's safe to assume that the E61i will be getting an update soon enough too!

Hm, interesting thought, as you can't display the files there at all.
    (Can't remember since I don't have a hacked N82 anymore)
However as mentioned earlier some settings will be reset when deleting the contents of the drive.

Seems quite fair to my ears that they would have some kind of measures on the Y: drive. It does after all change it's size quite rapidly sometimes. (When viewed with filemanager X-plore)
