SkyFire Beta Opened, Updated To v.85

SkyFire Beta Opened, Updated To v.85

The SkyFire web browser was launched a few months ago for S60, and promises a much faster browsing experience, thanks to some server-side processing. The end result is a smooth browser that’s also able to handle dang near any multimedia content you may stumble across. While SkyFire initially launched for the U.S. only, that restriction has been opened to include Canada and the U.K., as well, though you could probably work your way around that limitation if you’re crafty.

I loaded it up on my Nokia N95-3, and this new version definitely runs alot better than the first beta that I tried. I’m not getting freezes or crashes like I was, and I was able to watch a video on Hulu earlier over both 3G and WiFi with ease.

However, one caveat to server-based browsers such as SkyFire and Opera Mini is that any and all information that you access/enter has to pass through their servers. This includes usernames and passwords for various sites, email information, etc. While I would like to think that SkyFire has taken precautions about this (and I’m sure they have), I would still send out a word of warning that you likely won’t want to do any mobile banking or other uber-sensitive tasks through the SkyFire browser.

You can pick up the latest download here. (scroll all the way down to the ‘PC Download for Experts’)

  1. Have been testing it a couple of times now and it acts and looks quite great.

The only option I'm missing is that the weather at the startpage can't be set to my country. (But then again it's not available for us yet)
I was however able to just open the get.skyfire.com in my S60 browser and download and install the application.

Tried running youtube on Skyfire and when not using 'smart fit' the video played quite well whereas when using the mentioned function the video seemed to be a bit sluggish.

    Overall speed was quite good.

I totally agree with you on the fact when it comes to security while using external browsers. As they use their own servers to "chop" down the webpages, one can never know if their servers have been infiltrated.
  2. Hi guys! I'm from Russia which is actually not on the list of skyfire contries... I cannot download it! Tried all ways already! Can you simply mail me the file please? I'm desperate to find it somewhere else...

    thankx
