Make Full Use Of The Volume & Mute Keys On The E71
For the past few weeks, I have been toying with my Nokia E71 and the awesome application entitled Magic Key which allows me to remap buttons to different functions, and which I told you how to use and how I set it up on the N82. I had one objective in mind with the E71: make use of the volume and mute keys which are located on the right side of the handset in order to improve my whole experience. I started from the concept of this post I wrote earlier, about the lack of consistency in S60, and the different zoom in and zoom out used across the platform (Gallery, Camera, Web, Nokia Maps…). I also used this great tip from Eduardo over at the E71 blog who had used the volume keys to scroll in the web browser, and took great inspiration from the comments written on that post. Finally, this is what I came up with:
In all applications
- Magic Key setting: original key 242, maps to 182 (read my tutorial on how to use Magic Key)
- This means that the mute button, which is located between the volume keys, and which I never used before, is now set as a Play/Pause button. This is awesome as it allows me to control my music from anywhere on the handset.
In Web, Messaging and Camera
- Magic Key setting: original key 162 maps to 16, original key 163 maps to 17, original key 242 maps to 167.
- These 3 settings mean that the Volume up key now works as an Up arrow, Volume down works as a Down arrow, and the Mute button works as an Ok stroke. In other words, in Web and Messaging, I can now scroll using the volume keys, and select using the center mute button. Perfect. In Camera mode, I can Zoom in and out using the volume keys and capture the image with the center mute key. Brilliant.
In Nokia Maps
- Magic Key setting: original key 162 maps to 18, original key 163 maps to 1, original key 242 maps to 48.
- In better words, the volume up key now works as the Shift, volume down as Backspace, and mute button as the 0. What does it mean? Well that I can now Zoom in and out using the volume keys on the E71, and the mute button takes me back to my current location. Genius.
In Google Maps
- Magic Key setting: original key 162 maps to 51, original key 163 maps to 49, and original key 242 maps to 48.
- The same concept applies as to Nokia Maps, zooming in and out is done with the volume keys (which map to keys 1 and 3 that are usually used by Google Maps) and the mute button brings me back to my current location (maps to key 0).
In Nokia FriendView and Nokia viNe
- Magic Key setting: original key 162 maps to 42, original key 163 maps to 127, original key 242 maps to 50.
- Both FriendView and Nokia viNe use the * and # key for zooming in and out, so these Magic Key settings allow you to use the volume keys for zooming in and out. I also remapped the mute button to the 2 key, which allows me to make a new post or a comment in FriendView, but doesn’t serve any purpose in viNe.
All in all, I think I made the best out of the volume and mute key (the latter by the way I never used on my E71 before). I realize that this is something that a majority of you won’t be interested in doing, but I wanted to share it nonetheless. Here is a video demonstrating how everything works now on my E71:

I just have to figure out how to set it up properly on my N82.
(Though I know it was intended on use on the E71)
Using the volume buttons in Nokia Maps is particularly useful as you've mentioned earlier that the button layout varies depending on the handset.
One of the others I've tried was quickly assigning new keys "on the go" and without knowing that I suddenly had a mess of how my keys was working.
I sorted it out eventually but there were not much help from within the application.
Been trying out a 3 keymappers all together but the ability to choose profiles and the GUI of the MagicKey appeals more to me.
THX
Heres one for ya. Using the N85, in the middle of the night the OLED screen burns my eyes out, not much of an ambient light sensor, anyhow.......
I realized there has never been a shortcut key for Display Power....I quite often find myself manually clicking away to the settings. Daytime an Night time i find it useful. Nokia should really put it in consideration.
E71, shft + Volume. T9, menu key + volume key......whateva just taughts.

1) I set up a "Web Keymap" where I defined in the order below
VolumeUp->Up arrow
VolumeDown->Down arrow
UnknownF2->OK
2) Under applications I added "Web" and associated it with "Web Keymap"
3) Did "Options>StartOnBoot"
Launched Web, tried the arrow buttons... NOTHING. Decided to reboot, but MagicKey did not launch by itself. Checked the options and StartOtBoot is selected. In a sign of desperation I deleted the Web Keymap set and changed the Default Keymap. Still nothing. Grrr...
however, i after getting magickey to install on my e71, it will not let me add mapping for specific applications; it only works for all applications. Anyone got any idea how to fix this?
Can anybody help me please?? or if theres a file that has been successful, could you contact me?
i really need help on this guys..
What process did you use to sign the app?
even better would be the ability to start and stop the voice recorder using only the bluetooth headset while driving, but since the bluetooth input isn't a key, i doubt magic key will help . . .
Can anybody help me please?? or if theres a file that has been successful, could you contact me?
i really need help on this guys..
Thanks.
HELP!
HELP!
I think firmware v200 introduced some bug with MagicKey. It is now unusable with E71: Please help !!!
same problem here. Funny thing is MagicKey was the app that prompted me to hack my phone and look into signing certs and all.
oh well...
Btw, latest FW here. and obviously, a hacked phone.
So I'm having problems with the Magic Keys application.
I can't remap any keys or make magic key remap keys for a specific application (for instance google maps).
I wanted to remap my "play key" to the "mute key" on the right side of the phone.... NO GO!
Then I started to try all sorts of stuff like use magic key for 1 specified application.... NO GO!
Could someone who knows this application very well help all of us out?
It would be a big relief for me!
Waiting to hear from someone soon!
cheers
Another question I have, is there a way to sweitch the Ctrl and chr buttons? I think this may be a special case, given that ctrl by itself does nothing.
plzz help me
Thanks for the hints. BTW from where have you got the E71 keycodes, I've searched a lot the right combination of MUTE key.
One more question please: is there a chance to use the MUTE key for starting the internal recorder of E71? On E51 I've had a special key just for that and I miss this option.
Keep up the good work,
