Nokia N79 Gets Massive Firmware Update

Nokia N79 Gets Massive Firmware Update

Wow, the Nokia N79 has just received its first official firmware update, and a whopper it is! The phone has only been out on the market for a month or so, and was recently updated to v11.049. The gang over at S60inside got ahold of the changelog, and this is quite possibly the longest changelog, ever!

Pretty much every single feature on the Nokia N79 was touched in some way by this new firmware update, which should be available both through NSU and using the built-in Firmware OTA feature (accessed by pressing *#0000# from the standby screen). We’re not quite sure if this is limited to specific product codes just yet, so even if you have a NAM unit, it’s worth checking for.

I’ll be honest, I believe that one reason Nokia doesn’t typically release full changelogs is because it shows the faults that exist in current products. I’m somewhat stunned at the size and detail of this changelog, and have to wonder, just how ‘beta’ was this phone, if the first changelog is fixing so many things?

If you’re interested, you can check out the full changelog here. We typically don’t cover changelogs for firmware here at Symbian-Guru, since most of the time, a new firmware is definitely a recommended install.

  1. That, or 1) Nokia has changed their policy on details of changelogs (I agree: they have not, and IMHO, should not disclose in detail all the bugs that are being corrected; but people on blogs love to bitch about the lack of detail, so perhaps Nokia has decided to listen to this feedback.. hmm.. again, I think they should not or 2) the product manager has some discretion how much deail is disclosed OR 3) someone leaked the full changelog (and should get their butt whipped if they did).

There's nothing to be surprised about. *All* phones are released with a certain amount of defects present. It just so happened that the level of defects that were released in the N79 that were able to be solved with the firmware update was just a lot larger than the rest. If anything, this might be a change of the development practices at Nokia... that is, they might have a better system of tracking and addressing issues and then rolling out repairs for them.
  3. Wow, that changelog was indeed very long, after reading halfway I "escaped" from it.
(I usually do read the changelogs of phones)

What immediately came to me after reading it, was bad programming in terms of the OS communicating with the hardware or in general

"Phone does not go to sleep after opening/closing camera revea"
"The SMS switch to MMS automatically after adding more than 20 receivers"
    (Based on some assumptions?)

Most other fixes I can see is mostly regarding threading and language compatibility
"ChinaUI_MsgMngt: The localization of Junk in rules list view cannot be changed after changing the phone’s Language"

However I think that it's great for Nokia to release those changelogs as it really shows how much under the hood that happens in the phones.

Agreeing with ARJWright I have to say yes, there is always improvements and bugs to be fixed in terms of software / OS.
    (Need I say Windows?)

  4. I on the other hand, would like to see more of the changelogs, because it gives me a good sense of what annoyances will have disappeared. This is especially true because NSU is a pain in the *** to work with, and I want to see if the changes are worth it. I may not fit the typical profile of the NSU user though - I update my phone only twice a year or so - and I end up updating NSU every time.
  5. ..that E71 will someday receive a firmware with a changelog that long.

I'm referring to problems that users are reporting (this counts me too): http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/...hread.id=37295
  6. I have had the n79 for a week or so, i went and got the nam version at the ny store after reading on guru that they had a sale on a sat so i picked up the phone for 353.00 before tax. anyway thank you for that. i have not had any issues with the phone at all and i am not able to get this new update that you talk about. Maybe nokia removed it untill later, but as of one minute ago it was a no go, either with ota or pc suite updater. Please check into this for me.
    Thank you
