If you hate your Nokia N96 because it’s slow, unstable, and just plain unusable, I have good news for you – a new firmware update, v12.043, is now available for some product codes through Nokia’s Software Updater application! I’ve heard a few reports from folks with this firmware already loaded onto their N96s that say it’s *much* better, and makes the phone actually usable.
Unfortunately, Mrs. Guru still has my N96 (she’s growing to love it), so I’m unable to test it right now, but as soon as she gets home from work, I’ll definitely be loading it up on her N96. If you have your N96 handy, go ahead and give it a run. Please let us know if you run into any product code issues, or once we’re able to figure out what’s changed on this new version.
You can download Nokia’s Software Updater application here.

UPDATE – reader Micky has posted a few thoughts on the new firmware. We’ve now confirmed that it’s available, at least for product code 0543713, through both NSU and OTA (to access the OTA process, type *#0000# from your standby screen, press Options – Check for Updates). Here’s Micky’s observations:
Improved WiFi Performance. Connects faster, and Range Improved.
Main Camera Improvements to focus. (Used to be too fast).
Menu Navigation much smoother, and more importantly, no lagging, including online experience, is much more improved, with quicker connecting times, and page loading.
UPDATE 2 – I’ve had a few readers report that it’s also available for the NAM variant, as well, Good job, Nokia!
